USS Little Rock Stuck in Montreal, Ship Might Not Leave Until Spring (iced in)
USNI news ^ | 1/19/18 | Ben Werner

USS Little Rock (LCS-9), the latest Freedom-variant littoral combat ship to join the fleet, is iced in on the St. Lawrence Seaway in Montreal and doesn’t plan to move until the Spring thaw.

“Significant weather conditions prevented the ship from departing Montreal earlier this month and icy conditions continue to i

ntensify,” a Navy spokesperson told USNI News. “The temperatures in Montreal and throughout the transit area have been colder than normal, and included near-record low temperatures, which created significant and historical conditions in the late December, early January timeframe.”

A sustained blast of Arctic air that extended from late December into January caused ice to form faster than normal within in the Seaway, according to the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp., the agency established by the Canadian government to manage the Seaway. The Seaway closed for the season on January 11. Typically, the Seaway is open between March and December.

Canadian weather has declared war against one of our ships completely immobilizing it for the next couple of months.

The most advanced military in the world can still be bested by nature. I wonder what all those sand storms in Iraq do to our tanks and other equipment.

Perhaps the littoral combat ship should only stay in deep waters where ice is less of a problem?

This happened to a Canada Steamship Line ore carrier in Thunder Bay many years ago. Cold weather hadn’t arrived but the chief engineer had misread his bunker measurement.
I sent eight truckloads of hot Number 6 oil from Superior, WI to the boat and she exited before the freeze-in.

The Artic blast was scheduled a week in advance.

It was forecasted as extreme cold blowing down.

Wow. Frozen in. Who could've imagined that in the middle of January in Quebec?

The Captain of that ship must be an equal opportunity promotion.

Should have docked the ship up in the Arctic.

From what I hear, global warming has melted all the ice up there.

Our navy has gone to hell,. Who could be so stupid with our ship? Check out the weather channel!! We have two captains now charged with negligent homicide in the pacific. We have 20 dead sailors and $100 million in damages to OUR ships from grossly incompetent navy officers and now this humiliation. My GOD!!

From what I heard from Army acquaintances, the sand storms meant daily or oftener cleaning of air filters on the vehicles and other equipment, especially small arms.

Can its hull withstand being encased in ice?

Guess we'll find out.

I was in a gas station in Yakima WA three months after Mt. St. Helens blew.

There were pictures on wall showing how they kept the sheriff’s cars running during the ash fall.

A clothes dryer exhaust hose was duct taped to the air intake then run down the side of the car and attached to the rear. The end of the hose was covered with a pantyhose.

The guy at the station said they had to change the pantyhose every 1/2 hour.

“Perhaps the littoral combat ship should only stay in deep waters where ice is less of a problem?”

Or if in WW2 the ships captain would be called before the mast to explain his plight,

Will they have to run bubblers or agitation to prevent ice damage?
