Study: 42 percent of Repubs believe "accurate" but negative stories are ‘fake news’ (Barf alert)
Washington Post ^ | January 16th 2018 | Erik Wemple

All those media-trust studies have a tendency toward the rote. Yes, we already knew that the public had little trust in the country’s journalistic organs. Yes, we knew that finding credible sources could be a harrowing pursuit for the public. Yes, we knew that an increasing portion of the U.S. public felt that the news was biased.

Yet this nugget from a new Gallup-Knight Foundation survey just about knocked the Erik Wemple Blog out of a decade-long media-research torpor:

"Four in 10 [or 42 percent of] Republicans consider accurate news stories that cast a politician or political group in a negative light to always be “fake news.” [The corresponding figure for Democrats is 17 percent.]"

Perhaps President Trump’s associates should place that data point in his daily briefing packet so that he can brag about it. There’s precedent for that, after all: Back in September 2016, a Gallup poll found cratering public trust in the media. Asked about that situation, Trump despaired not. “I think I had a lot to do with that poll … because I’ve exposed the media. If you look at the New York Times, and The Washington Post, and if you look at others: the level of dishonesty is enormous. It’s so dishonest. I can do something that’s wonderful and they make it sound terrible,” Trump said in an interview.

So a fake news article about fake news.

Cool.

Sorry, but Fake News doesn’t get to define fake news. The Washington Post never even heard about Fake News until Donald Trump came along.

How they phrased the poll question is left to the imagination. Perhaps all this means is that what the pollsters consider to be “accurate news stories” is not considered accurate by others.

Who judges that? The WaPo? Please.

If the “accurate” article says that the Donald eats Big Macs, or had two scoops of ice cream, then yes, it is fake “news”

This is an example of a fake news story.

Except "accurate" based on "feelings" is likely still fake news...

It's like Comey's memos and his testimony..."He felt...."

accurate can be fake:

a dem and a repub have a race.

the dem comes in second, the repub, next to last.

accurate, but fake.

“The Washington Post never even heard about Fake News until Donald Trump came along.”

My recollection is that Trump turned the phrase against them. It was originally created as a meme to neutralize conservative websites.

Actually, “fake news” was coined by the WaPo.

In an article that was itself fake.

I was actually the one who put those quotation marks in. I probably shouldn’t have but I couldn’t resist.

Even were this to be correct, which is dubious given the source, did they do a similar study to see how many Democrats believe a story (regardless of its veracity) that portrayed the POTUS or any Republican in a negative light simply because of its source?

If not, then the news agency is perpetuating “fake news”.

Well, if the link to a news headline takes me to the Washington Post, I assume the content and spin is fake news.

The WP has a paywall so if I get linked to it more than a few times each month, I’m blocked out for the rest of the month. Being blocked out does not bother me as I don’t like the WP.

There’s a big difference between saying “Trump will no doubt play up the size of this crowd despite the empty seats (show picture of auditorium before it was full). That’s just the way Trump is — a narcissist, according to several reputable psychiatrists.”

Versus saying, “No individual since Dr. Martin Luther King, or maybe the charismatic Sarah Palin, has been able to consistently raise such crowds, especially with only short notice.”

Both characterizations could conceivably be used to describe the same event; and we KNOW which one the lamestreams consistently employ.

THAT’S what we are calling “fake news”.

I know it hurts their prissy little feelings; sorry Charlie. Cry me a river.
