Sen. Lindsey Graham says he scolded the president for saying something scatological about certain countries and their immigrants. Diversity has always been our strength, he allegedly said. By my count, this makes Graham the bazillionth person to proclaim some variant of diversity is strength.
Is it true? I think the only close to right answer is, it depends. Specifically, it depends on what often clichéd analogy you have in mind. Diverse stock portfolios are more resilient. Diverse diets are healthier. But that doesnt mean picking bad stocks will make you richer or that eating spoiled foods is good for you.
I once heard Jesse Jackson explain that racial integration of the NBA made it stronger and better. He was right. But would gender integration of the NBA have the same effect? Would diversifying professional basketball by height? Probably not.
All of these analogies can take you only so far. Thomas Sowell once said, The next time some academics tell you how important diversity is, ask how many Republicans there are in their sociology department.
Theres a growing body of evidence that even if diversity the kind that results from immigration once made America stronger, it may not be doing so anymore. Robert Putnam, a liberal sociologist at Harvard, found that increased diversity corrodes civil society by eroding shared values, customs and institutions. People tend to hunker down and retreat from civil society, at least in the short and medium term.

Some things are intuitively obvious.
What if you really can’t learn much from cultures that are stuck in the 7th century?
What if the Clintons really aren’t good people?
What if the reason Obama hasn’t released a US birth certificate is because he doesn’t have one?
America has never been about diversity primarily. It’s always been about unity as an end result.
“Diversity of opinions is nearly always a good thing. That can be done with or without a variety of racial backgrounds. “
Universities have the opposite concept of diversity.
College campus “diversity” is where they all look different, and they all think exactly the same.
” Thomas Sowell once said, “The next time some academics tell you how important diversity is, ask how many Republicans there are in their sociology department.” “
Keeper.
What if Liberal Snowflakes read this thread?
Wouldn’t it increase their diversity?
The problem is that the “immagrants” don’t want to become American Citizens. They want to reap our welfare rewards, not learn the language and customs of America, and make their little area into the same place they came from.
At least in the military, there is a forced common goal from people of all places. The way things are set up now, there is no incentive.
Our strength has always been unity, liberty and faith in God.
It is settled science you know. The consensus is in. Everybody agrees. There is your diversity.
Diversity is and always has been a burden, a curse, a cross to bear. It is our strength to be able to manage diversity and create unity.
Flash forward to a hospital ER in Los Angeles 2018. It is filled wall to wall with snot nosed parasites who have no intention of paying for services.
Miguel, Rosita, Da'quarious, and Shaneesha don't give a damn. They have a "free" Medi-Cal card and are hell bent on getting their "free" stuff. Instead of buying some Tylenol and Gatorade and getting bed rest, they are going to tie up an ER with their snotty noses. And bill the tax payers a couple thousand dollars per visit for the honor.
An intelligent, genetically sound, homogeneous population is to be preferred to a population of random drug and alcohol addicted mentally deficient parasites and gibs-me-dats.
Bump!
Our strength is shared VALUES. In the USA, you can have American values regardless of origin, race, or sex. The first 200 years saw immigrants show up and embrace American values and it was our strength.
Not the diversity itself, but the values. Thats the key to the DiS argument.
So a hard working west African who just got off the plane and wants to be an American and participate in America is building strength more than a rich, white college student who hates everything about her country.
Diversity is Strength only if you examine the motives of the person and dont just count their skin color. It is about individuals and not about groups.
Strength through superior firepower, and unity.
Culture and Constitution... God Bless the Founding Fathers who created a system to hold ‘elites’ in check...
Clarence Thomas was right when he recently said he couldn’t see anything that bound us together as a nation. We aren’t even two nations; we are one that is traditionally “American” (somewhat in the mindset of the Founding Fathers in terms of the role of government and individuals), and countless smaller ones on the left that can’t even agree on anything between themselves. Obama won when those smaller ones were ALL aligned, and Hillary lost when a couple of segments split off (Bernie/Jill Stein types, others that just stayed home).
Kudos to the FReeper who referred to the barriers all over NYC before any parades now as “diversity barriers”!
Globalism is patriotism.
Hugely shocked and pleased to see the LA Times do this.
This was in the LA Slimes?
Diversity? More like predators coming here for easy pickings... Comments from a Peace Corp volunteer.

The Ten Commandments were not disobeyed they were unknown. The value system was the exact opposite. You were supposed to steal everything you can to give to your own relatives. There are some Westernized Africans who try to rebel against the system. They fail.
We hear a lot about the kleptocratic elites of Africa. The kleptocracy extends through the whole society. My town had a medical clinic donated by international agencies. The medicine was stolen by the medical workers and sold to the local store. If you were sick and didn’t have money, drop dead. That was normal.
So here in the States, when we discovered that my 98-year-old father’s Muslim health aide from Nigeria had stolen his clothes and wasn’t bathing him, I wasn’t surprised. It was familiar.
In Senegal, corruption ruled, from top to bottom. Go to the post office, and the clerk would name an outrageous price for a stamp. After paying the bribe, you still didn’t know it if it would be mailed or thrown out. That was normal.
One of my most vivid memories was from the clinic. One day, as the wait grew hotter in the 110-degree heat, an old woman two feet from the medical aides who were chatting in the shade of a mango tree instead of working collapsed to the ground. They turned their heads so as not to see her and kept talking. She lay there in the dirt. Callousness to the sick was normal.
In the past several decades however, two groups in particular have invaded our borders with no intention of ever subsuming their 'culture' of origin to become truly 'American'.
Moslems and Mexicans are, with few exceptions, latter-day Trojan Horses within our gates with the aim of plundering the storehouses and defiling the notion of true citizenship.
Of course there are some among both groups who honestly wish to assimilate, yet the actions and attitudes of the contrary many denigrate the efforts of the laudable few.
The current 'politically correct' concept of 'diversity', whether espoused from simple naivete on one end of the continuum, to crass venality on the other, is light years removed from, and antithetical to, the assumptions underlying America's historic welcome mat.
Absent the aforementioned shared values and goals, America is not a nation at all, but a cacophony of shrillness that's destined to implode.
