An NBC Bay Area investigation into the safety of the Oroville Dam has now prompted the City of Oroville itself to sue the state of California.
Last September, following a six-month investigation, NBC Bay Area's Investigative Unit uncovered several issues that experts say raise questions about the safety of the Oroville Dam itself.
This followed the collapse of the dam's spillway during exceptionally heavy rains last February. Events state officials admitted they were not expecting.
On Wednesday, lawmakers from a prominent Bay Area legal firm announced the filing of a lawsuit against California's Department of Water Resources on behalf of the City of Oroville and its 188,000 residents.
The lawsuit, which cites NBC Bay Area's investigation several times, claims warning of safety issues went ignored by DWR for years and that Oroville's citizens remain at-risk because those safety issues have still not been adequately addressed.
Oroville, CA has a population of 188,000? Who knew?
They already had this conversation, didn’t they? The damage to the spillway was caused by..........someone that did not understand what they were designing. Just out of school and never seen a dam before from what I remember.
How’s the state suing the feds?
nvm...suing california. well, good luck with seeing a check.
The need is real; the target is out there in left field.
"California" is just a convenient social construct. It is not a real thing in the human sense (forget "legal" irrationalities for a moment.)
Who should be sued are mental deficient, ignorant criminals elected over the last 50 years who considered the legislature as their private playground rather than as structured limited defined power.
SUED.
ALL OF THEM, PRESENT AND LIVING PAST CRIMINALS.
I get the sentiment, but in the longer view it pays to remember that there’s a perfectly functional, eternal, flaming Hell waiting to receive them, and — contrary to popular opinion — EVERY corner is PLENTY hot enough.
Yeah, you might not get the satisfaction of seeing them “pay up” in this sphere, but — soon or late — the righteous and fearsome demands of Justice WILL be satisfied.
but in the longer view it pays to remember that theres a perfectly functional, eternal, flaming Hell waiting to receive themOn the other hand organized religion tells us they can be forgiven/saved by simply confessing their sins...Which one is the lie?
A. There are any number of “organized religion[s]” most false, so whatever it is the false ones say may be dismissed out of hand.
B. The one true organized religion teaches not merely that one must confess their sin, but also repent of it, and establish their faith in that One Person Whose death satisfied Justice on their behalf, and Whose resurrection proved His authority and capacity to make that saving work stick.
C. That the guilty “can” be saved is no lie, but that does not nullify the truth that Hell awaits them; it merely brings out that the guilty have a choice to make, a further point I omitted as my purpose was not evangelistic.
it is interesting that one entity funded by the california general fund is suing another entity funded by the california general fund, for damages to be paid by california general funds. only in california?
California passed a multi billion $$$ WATER BOND a few years back. WHERE did that $$$$ go? NO one is even asking.
Bad reporting. Actual 2016 estimate 19,895.
I haven’t confirmed but 188K seems like it could be
the population of all of Butte County. I reside
close to a one hour drive to Oroville.
While Oroville itself has far fewer than 188,000 people, that was the total number of people reported to have been subject to the evacuation.
