Scott Pruitt insincerely asked what's Earth's ideal temperature. Scientists answer
The Guardian ^ | January 17, 2018 | by Dana Nuccitelli

In an interview with Reuters last week, Trump’s EPA administrator Scott Pruitt said, "The climate is changing. That’s not the debate. The debate is how do we know what the ideal surface temperature is in 2100?"

Pruitt’s goal is to sow doubt on behalf of his oil industry allies in order to weaken and delay climate policies. Shifting the ‘debate’ toward ‘the ideal surface temperature’ achieves that goal by creating the perception that we don’t know what temperature we should aim for. It’s in line with recent ignorant tweet suggesting that “Perhaps we could use a little bit of that good old Global Warming.”

I spoke with a number of climate scientists who agreed that to minimize the risks associated with rapid human-caused climate change, from a practical standpoint the ‘ideal temperature’ is as close to the current one as possible.

Stefan Rahmstorf at the Potsdam Institute pointed out that we’re not concerned about specific temperatures; it’s rapid temperature changes that cause problems.

Texas Tech’s Katharine Hayhoe agreed, noting that human civilization has developed in the relatively stable climate of the past 10,000 years.

Michael Mann, Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State also pointed out that we’re approaching some critical temperature thresholds. For example, his research has shown that at warmer temperatures, reproduction of malaria-transmitting parasites increases rapidly.

Naomi Oreskes, Professor at Harvard similarly noted that according to the peer-reviewed literature on climate change impacts, we’re already headed into dangerous territory.

Unfortunately, the Trump Administration is doing everything it can to delay and weaken efforts to cut carbon pollution. Pruitt isn’t interested in these scientific answers to his question; he’s interested in helping his fossil fuel industry benefactors. He’s one of Oreskes’ Merchants of Doubt, but his time in power will be as finite as Donald Trump’s.

When the Sun cycles down and the next Ice Age begins, we will not be able to make enough CO2 to stop it even if we tried.

I've been saying no one knows what the temperature of the earth should be at any point in time...

And that no one knows what the temperature was at any point in time.

It is what it is and there is no way to predict the future "proper" temperature.

It's not like the rising and setting sun.

human civilization has developed in the relatively stable climate of the past 10,000 years

...and liberalism has developed in whatever the climate has been over the last 100 years. Surely we're due for a change?

The left pushed for years to get evolution in schools.

In evolution, those species who cannot adapt to change will die off.

The only constant on earth is change.

Of course that doesn't matter, what matters is their narrative.

Just like with Sex Education, it was "we have to teach the children about the biological process".

With their Transgendered stuff they deny the very biology they trumpet to teach.

So, “scientists” propose that we somehow put the Quaternary ice age on hold? The climate we’ve enjoyed over the past 10,000 years is not the norm. It’s an exception to the much colder and drier ice age we’re currently in. The alternate is the hothouse mode, which is significantly warmer than we’ve ever had to deal with.

And yet, Pruitt's question wasn't answered. Was the temperature ideal that of the Little Ice Age, Medieval Warm Period, etc.?

Funny that the Left-wing Guardian gets its panties in a wad over “global warming” because warming temperatures increase the reproduction of malaria-producing parasites. The Brits should be far more worried about their country and others in Europe being flooded with malaria-producing immigrants. That health crisis is immediate, not a hundred years from now.

...what temperature we should aim for.

How hard can it be? We all do it at home every day.

I kind of like my temperature to be around 73 degrees (F.) in the winter and around 70 degrees (F.) in the summer. For the purpose of maintaining these temps, I have buttons I push on the HVAC controls in my house and various buttons and dials in my cars. Everything else is sort of immaterial to me since I wear more clothing when it is colder out and less when it is warmer. If climatic and/or socio-economic conditions make this control impossible, I’ll probably be dead.

Not surprisingly, this is all over the map – they don’t care about the specific temperature, they care about the rapid change. Which brings us to the topic of mosquitoes. And that reminds me that temperatures have been stable for 10,000 years – ignoring the Medieval Maximum, the Maunder Minimum and all the other well-recorded ups and downs. But let’s talk about CO2 – let’s talk about Trump, and by the way oil companies are evil …

My head is spinning.

Hey, No bias there!
Did they even attempt to show what's so special about the current temperature? Billions of years of constant change and just as you come into existence, the Earth finally hits the climate sweet spot. And all this time you thought a goal of science was to eliminate subjectivity.

Nope. No bias there.

When they say, its the warmest day since 1888, I have to ask, what was going on in 1888? When they say, its the warmest since the Roman Empire, I have to ask, what was going on during the Roman Empire?

There is never an answer.

They can explain why Mars is warming (variations in the orbit, variations in solar output). They can explain why Jupiter is warming (internal dynamics). They can explain why Pluto is warming (again, variations in orbit). Or why the various moons of Saturn are warming (stresses caused by variations in gravity, I suppose)... All of the various planets and moons show variations in temperature, upward, but only Earth’s are caused by SUVs.

OK, that line got a chuckle out of me. The word, “distinguished” has no place in that sentence.

What a crock. Humans and the earth thrived at temperatures degrees warmer than at the present, during the Medeival Warm period and the Roman optimum, and others during the last 10,000 years, when temperatures averaged higher than at present.

If malaria were truly a concern, they would spend a few millions eradicating it with PROVEN DDT instead of trying to hit some global “ideal” temperature by spending TRILLIONS...which won’t work, anyway. What a ridiculous way to try to stop the spread of disease.

I like your comment...keep out disease ridden parasites from Sh*tholes.
