A mezzanine floor has collapsed at the Jakarta stock exchange building (IDX), injuring dozens of people. Dramatic CCTV footage captured the moment of collapse, which sent a group of more than 30 students gathered on the mezzanine crashing into the lobby.

The area was evacuated and cordoned off by police, but trading has now resumed.

Police say 72 people were hurt and are being treated in three different hospitals in Jakarta, but there have been no fatalities.

I. Imagine thus will be big news given how words like “collapse” and “floor” are used in discussions on stock markets.

>>>”Third world construction”

Yes, no where close to the standards in Kansas City which killed over 100 in a similar collapse.

Not similar at all. The KC incident was a skybridge. This one was a mezzanine. Vastly different construction techniques.

Years ago (1970s) we were shipping fairly large (and heavy) hydraulic transfer presses to a semiconductor assembly operation in Singapore. The production line was on the 2nd floor. No suitable freight elevator. Up they went on bamboo scaffolding without incident.

Re the Hyatt collapse.

Designed for disaster! The engineers were negligent as hell. Third world indeed.

The parts holding up the walkway look like they were just glued to the wall

FYI. I am the blue gill slayer.

Twice a week I venture forth in my kayak and with my trusty fly rods and popping bugs I catch them.

Some weigh as much as one ounce. some are much larger

Ah. I have fished fresh water on many occasions. Have caught bluegills and other fare, including largemouth and chain pickerel. But I’m 4-5 miles from a ramp on LI Sound. My 19.5’ runabout only enters the water for fishing purposes. Me and my boys catch some pretty interesting salt water species. My brother who lives 7-8 miles south of me, near the ocean, uses his kayak to fish in a brackish river One day last year he hooked up to something that towed him for many 10s of yards until spitting the hook.

Fishing is great.

Not similar at all.

Both were suspended over open space. Both fell because of poor professional work. The biggest difference is that in the third world there might be justice for the victims.
