“Raw oysters? Hate them. It’s like eating wads of phlegm.”

I had an all day job one time shucking them for a big party. Some of the stuff I saw convinced me! Smoked or fried ok.

I was introduced to oysters--in New Orleans, ironically--many years ago. My impression was that they were largely over-rated, at least when eaten raw. I mostly remember the inevitable few grains of sand that seem to accompany every oyster.

Yeah, I remember when it seemed as though every bar and po-boy joint in New Orleans had a raw bar. I once saw an oyster-eating contest go horribly wrong in the French Quarter; the *splat* of those dozens of partially-digested oysters hitting the cobblestones was enough to make me lost interest in the raw variety, pretty much permanently. IIRC, the unfortunate scene was featured on the weekend news. Blech.

One of my jobs when I was in college in New Orleans was shucking oysters. Thank God for the heavy, banded rubber gloves!

But if it got real cold there would be a nice partially digested shell fish steam aroma.

That close to the river, there’s always a “low tide” sort of aroma. Winter is actually a nice time to visit the Quarter, it cuts down the pungency quite a bit. Gives one an excuse to have a hand in the ol’ jacket pocket, as well...

I only did it for a day but saw enough tiny starfish, worms etc to calm my ardor for raw oysters. Had snails in Europe with no problems.

Texas residents Vicki Bergquist and wife Jeanette LeBlanc were visiting family in Louisiana. They went crabbing with friends and family on the coast, picking up a sack of raw oysters in a market in Westwego. It wasn't long after when LeBlanc's health rapidly declined

They should have stuck to just eating clams.

You are joking, but there is bacteria down there that have killed people with “strep throat”.

So it is a legit question as whether it was the oysters or her girlfriend’s own incubating mussle which lead to this

yuck
