“pubic” is just about as close as it gets for any liberal on his way to adulthood.
True story: I was working for a conservative congressman back in the 1970’s and one day I asked one of the veteran women staffers (there were only two men on the staff, myself and another gentleman) to show me how they handled mail and the robotype machine.
She pulled off a newly printed letter that the congressman was sending to about 2,500 Republican women on the issue of “Public Campaign Financing Reform”.
Well, having been a copy-editor as well as reporter, I read it and said that there was an very embarrassing typo in it. I gave it to the staffer and pointed that that instead of “Public Campaign Finance Reform”, it read “Pubic Campaign Finance Reform, to which she said half hysterically and half in humor, “Oh my god, we just sent out 650 copies of this letter to leading Republican women across the U.S.”
They rest did not get sent and we laughed our backsides off. She did thank me for helping to prevent a further spelling faux pas.
There was no “autocheck” back in those days. People actually had to do their own proofreading.
