The Australian city of Sydney has experienced its hottest weather in 79 years with temperatures in the region hitting as high as 47.3C (117F).
In Penrith, west of Sydney, residents sweltered as the town bore the brunt of the heat on Sunday.
Severe fire warnings were issued for the greater Sydney area and total fire bans were put in place across the city.
Sunday's temperatures fell short of the scorching heat to hit the area in 1939, when the mercury reached 47.8C.
The sweltering temperatures reached in Penrith were confirmed by the Bureau of Meteorology.
ABC reported that one charity, Mission Australia, helped transfer homeless people to hospital for treatment while taking others into shelters to avoid the heat.
Bahar and Amir Kashefi tried not to let the heat ruin their wedding day in Sydney. "I'm sweating, my bridesmaid is sweating," the bride, Bahar, told ABC.
"I think I am going to cut the wedding short, go straight back to the hotel and jump in the pool."
About 7,000 properties across New South Wales were left without electricity, partly because of the heat, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
At the Sydney Cricket Ground, England's batsmen struggled on the hottest day on record for a Test match in Australia.
Players participating in the Sydney international tennis tournament were forced off the court at 10:00 local time on Sunday (23:00 GMT Saturday) by the event's organisers after temperatures courtside exceeded 40C.
France's Kristina Mladenovic apologised after she retired midway through her match against Australia's Ellen Perez because of the heat.
"43 degrees but probably 50 on court when started," Mladenovic tweeted, adding: "I'm sorry to the fans, I think it's the first time in my career I retired [from] a match."

Meh. I spent a few weeks in Dallas a year and a half ago. Car thermometer read 120 on several consecutive days.

Well, there you have it - proof of global warming. It’s so easy to provide verification scientifically. Just locate the warmest area on the globe and take the temperature. Then if it is a new high temp, voila! Proof of global warming.
Now, if the PC meteorologists are claiming a new ice age, just do the opposite - find the coldest area of the globe and take the temperature. If it is a new coldest temp for the day - there you have it. proof of a new ice age.
Hell in the Phoenix Valley that is down right commonplace.
For the city of Phoenix, I think the record is 122. The entire valley has probably had instances of 125 or more.
That’s about Phoenix in the summer territory.
The high desert out here in Oregon will hit 100-105 daytime for weeks during the summer, and no rain.
The only plus is the temp drop overnight. Easily a 30~40 degree swing.
The earth is about 3.5 million miles closer to the sun in early January than in early July. North of the Tropic of Cancer that effect is overriden by the tilt of the earth and the length of days and how high the sun goes in the sky. Still, considering that Sydney is right by the Pacific Ocean this is unusually hot for Sydney. They must be getting the weather coming in from the hot interior.
Sydney + January + 47 degrees = End of the world
Boston + January + Blizzard = End of the world
Try a Phoenix Arizona or Yuma Arizona summer at 140 degrees F.
No wonder it’s so damn cold here. All the heat got sucked down to Australia which in turn sucked the cold from the North Pole. It is all part and parcel of man’s impact on the climate.
Joke if you will but warming means warming (except when it’s coolinf in which case it’s because of warming).
