That’s how I’ve always looked at it.
Some one hundred years earlier, the European continent was embroiled in the 30 years war. Called a religious war between the Christian sects, though there was more to it. And of course the Church of England situation was the reason many made their way to these shores. The founders, students of history and the nature of men knew there could not be an established church.
It doesn’t matter what path they took to that conclusion, but thank God they did.
But it never meant that people of faith could not serve in government.
