I have a DVD of “La Traviata” done with no scenery at all, and it works. Better no scenery than crappy scenery.

Better no scenery than crappy scenery.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Crappy scenery is a distraction and a detraction.

No, this is Marlis Petersen and a production from Graz, Austria.

Oh.OK.

The one with the ticking clock was an obvious, (cartoonish) reminder (unnecessary!) of Violetta’s deteriorating condition.

My favorite Violetta was Beverly Sills. Even though she was a bit plump (her nickname was “Bubbles”) she managed to convey the ravages of TB and her last scene was heartbreaking.

Anna Netrebko was more convincingly frail-looking, and we REALLY didn’t need the giant clock. LOL

I saw Bubbles in my very first live operatic experience, which happened in Seattle in 1972. She was in “Lucia.”

NUMBER ONE HIT FOR 1989

This was one of the most successful acts in rock history, the rock equivalent of a big band. Note that the music was beginning to compost again.

She grew up in my old Neighborhood!

I loved her. She was a REAL PERSON.

I never had the chance to see her live, but I had a lot of Opera VHS Tapes with her on them.

Bubbles was known for having a very even temperament and not subject to the shouting and screaming of many divas.

Once at La Scala, she was given a costume that did not look good on her at all. She kept sending it back, only to get it returned. One day at a rehearsal, after receiving the costume again, she ripped it in half.

The entire orchestra applauded her.

NUMBER ONE HIT FOR 1990

It was time for the next generation of pop artists to take center stage. This trio had an impressive pedigree.

Your time zone? Are you caught in the deep freeze?

Hey there, Kathy!

Guess I'm as ready to ring in the new year as anyone else. LOL! Less than 3 hours for us now.

Warm in the house but frigid outside. We WISH there was no wind but it's been whipping all day. The wind chill overnight is supposed to be below zero! The temp is supposed to dip somewhere around 8 or so. TOO FREAKIN' COLD for TN!!
