NUMBER ONE HIT FOR 1949Vaughn Monroe was known as “the baritone with hair on his chest.” He owned a nightclub outside Boston and hosted a radio show there. As the Big Bands faded, solo singers took up their places on the Hit Parade, and Monroe was one of the biggest.
