Dershowitz: My Liberal Friends Say My Trump Defenses Are 100 Percent Right (tr)

Politico wrote about a few top media and political figures and how they dealt with being mentioned by President Trump on Twitter. For one Hillary Clinton supporter, liberal Democrat Alan Dershowitz says his family has seen better days. Dershowitz, a lawyer, is seen regularly on CNN, Fox News, and other outlets defending some of President Trump's decision, arguing there is no grounds for an obstruction of justice charge after he fired FBI Director James Comey earlier this year. While hoping that former Vice President Joe Biden challenges Trump in 2020, the liberal lawyer has said he’s lost several pounds this year, thanks to friends not inviting him to dinner anymore. He said his closest friends have told him that he’s 100 percent right in his arguments defending Trump's decision to fire Comey, but added that he should also shut the f**k up. In all, Dershowitz says he’s merely defending the principles of the Constitution, not Trump—though that’s fallen on deaf ears from his liberal colleagues.

Dershowitz told the publication the hate mail he’s received centers on people accusing him of defending Trump because of Jerusalem, money, wanting to be on the Supreme Court, or yearning to be the president's lawyer. Dershowitz says all of the above is false. Besides already being successful, he’s 79-years-old, which pretty much counts him out for a SCOTUS nomination. He also has no interest in becoming Trump’s lawyer either (via Politico):

For Dershowitz, a former liberal standard-bearer and Harvard Law School professor, Trump plugging his TV hits and legal opinions has caused family rifts and social awkwardness. “It’s caused me to lose seven pounds,” Dershowitz said. “My liberal friends don’t invite me to dinner anymore.”

[…]

“My really, really close friends say, ‘You’re 100 percent right in your analysis, but can’t you just shut the f–k up and not talk at all,’” he said. “They tell me, ‘This is a time for selective silence.’ My nephew thinks I’m helping keep in office one of the greatest dangers in American history. I tell him I’m just standing up for principle. He tells me that I don’t have to stand up so loud.”

[…]

If the president’s Twitter accolades have been a problem for Dershowitz’s social and family life, it has had its professional upsides. “I think my view has had an impact,” he said. “I think I’ve changed the debate on the subject of obstruction of justice. I’m happy with the role I’m playing. I don’t get pleasure out of being praised by the president, but it’s not going to stop me from doing what I do.”

Overall, he said, his family is suffering more than he is. “I was a source of pride to my kids, my grandkids,” he said. “Now it’s ‘Oy, he’s related to Alan Dershowitz.’ That hurts me a little bit.”

Dershowitz is a good example of die-hard liberals who voted for Hillary, know she lost, and have moved on as a result. He has the added bonus of calling out his own side to overreaching on legal issues in the hopes of impeaching Donald Trump. Yeah, in liberal circles, that could cost you friendships, but Dershowitz seems quite content that’s in the right on this issue.

Dershowitz is learning what happens when you stray too close to the edge of the plantation.

Look how kind and compassionate the libs are, they ostracize a 79 year old man for speaking the truth, and also make him physically ill, from the sound of it. Stay classy, Dims.

...”Look how kind and compassionate the libs are, they ostracize a 79 year old man for speaking the truth, and also make him physically ill, from the sound of it. Stay classy, Dims.”...

Dershowitz has lived long enough to become wise. The wise man or woman will stand for truth even if they stand alone. “Progressives” want to overturn our form of government “by the people” to be replaced by an elite which has managed to grab the power “by hook or by crook” and who will do anything to enslave this population for their own ends. Stand in there, Alan Dershowitz! Who needs friends like you describe anyway. They want to use force and cruelty to bring about the world they think they want and are too stupid to have studied history which would enlighten them about the socialism and communism they are promoting. It has all been tried before over and over and over again with tragic consequences every time. Have you ever wondered why there are so many among us who are wise but so few, who are as courageous as Dershowitz? I have and I do all the time.

All due praise for Mr. Dershowitz’ intellectual honesty.

If he lives long enough he will become a hardcore conservative. ( that is not to wreck his personal life, but rather to those who need enlightenment.)

Good points, and he is also wise enough to feel liberated by his age and speak freely, even though he is noticing consequences.

I admire his stance on this one issue.

It’s just too bad, with all his accumulated years, that he’s still not smart enough or wise enough to make the great intellectual leap necessary to consider; if his Leftist friends are wrong about this single issue, maybe they’re wrong about every issue. Maybe the entire ideology isn’t based on principle but on power.

Of course, then he’d be a conservative.

The whiny bits where Dershowitz laments loss of “friends” is indicative of liberal group think where acceptance among membership is more important than the truth.

At 79, he has finally reached a point in his life where he has said something publicly counter to the shared consensus of the group.

Immediate ostracization is the templated reaction of the group.

Like clockwork.

He is indeed on one of the classic paths from left to right. It may be too late in life for him to follow it to the end, but a start is better than nothing.

Adult conversion stories, political as well as religious, are often interesting. Among intellectually serious people, those moving from left to right far outnumber those moving the other way. One of the most common reasons is that morally thoughtful people become weary and then disillusioned by the left's constant lying. Another common reason is religious conversion (which is really the same thing, when you get down to it).

If it’s true that a conservative is a liberal that’s been mugged, then I suppose this is something close to a mugging for him, so maybe there’s still hope that he’ll come around.

I like Dershowitz. He’s a very left wing guy but he is intellectually honest and is willing to walk into the fire for his principles. I respect that.

Your family might, miiiiiiiiight, be suffering because Virginia is a very believable source from the inside of Epstein’s international human trafficking Pedo world, no? A 16 year old girl held as a sex slave? I’m sure your lovely older wife and your kids are not thrilled that when the Clinton Pedo scandal finally is revealed, you’re big on that list. Epstein didn’t only pay you in cash, did he? Virginia remembers at least 5 times having sex with the lawyer Alan, recognizing you in her testimony, and in different states, and in the air. I wonder if you ever went to Pedo Island because that is more than child rape, isn’t it? International trafficking of children. The great Dershowitz brought down by his own pecker.

But you are very smart. Stay on right wing tv shows and keep talking up what the right likes to hear. Conservatives will apparently forgive even rape of a child sex slave if you tell them they are correct politically. They are that desperate. And I am one and I hate that meme, that no matter how foul your character, if you agree with us, you’re in.
