Trump dines on world leaders’ dime, yet to reciprocate gesture

President Trump enthusiastically embraced the red carpets, military parades and fancy dinners that were lavished upon him during state visits on his recent tour of Asia.

‘‘Magnificent!’’ he declared at one point on the trip.

But Trump has yet to reciprocate, making him the first president in almost a century to close his first year in office without welcoming a visiting counterpart to the US with similar trappings.

Trump spoke dismissively of state dinners as a candidate, when he panned President Barack Obama’s decision to welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping with a 2015 state visit.

“‘I would not be throwing [Xi] a dinner,’’ Trump said at the time.

‘‘I would get him a McDonald’s hamburger and say we’ve got to get down to work.’’

Last month it was Xi’s turn to literally roll out the red carpet.

The Chinese leader poured on the pageantry as he welcomed Trump to Beijing on what was billed as a ‘‘state visit, plus.’’

Trump also enjoyed state visits to South Korea and Vietnam.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said there was no ‘‘singular reason’’ why Trump hadn’t extended a state visit invitation yet, but added that the administration hoped to schedule a visit early in 2018. Sanders gave no hints about which of Trump’s foreign counterparts are being considered for the diplomatic honor.

A state visit typically is offered as a sign of friendship and to showcase strategic ties between countries that are important to each other, said Anita McBride, a veteran of three Republican administrations who last served as chief of staff to first lady Laura Bush.

‘‘The White House is the world stage to elevate that,’’ she said. ‘‘These occasions really go a long way to solidify and strengthen relationships.’’

This may come as “news” to you, NYPost, but those world leaders don’t spend a dime of their own money on those trappings. They spend the money of their subjects.

So China is going to start a war because Xi did not like the entrée? Sorry to tell you but wars are not started over the menu.

And when he does do it, they’ll piss and moan about all the excess and how it’d be better spent on the poor.

Furthermore, the USA gives away billions every year in foreign aid all over the place. GIVES AWAY.

... recent tour ... has yet to reciprocate

No bias here. obama would have been given years, hillary, decades, to reciprocate.

PDJT has met with more than 100 heads of state. Who needs the pomp and expense of a state visit. The joint press coference is only wanted to bash POTUS 45. Don’t Need it.

Good point. In effect, American taxpayers are paying for those trappings.

I’d pay good money to see a State dinner composed of Big Macs and Quarter Pounders.

Then the legacy media would bitch that Burger King was treated unfairly.

What a joke. A huge difference between Trump and Zero is that Zero needed it to feel important - all pomp and circumstance - a true jive turkey.

Trump has been there/done that all his life. If he thinks it’s important, worth the bang for the buck - he’ll do it.

Trump doesn’t need to kiss anyone’s ring or butt or put on a fake show.

Funny how I recall that too. I also know Trudeau has visited although how much pomp and circumstance was involved I don’t know.
