This old Army guy, like many, doesn't know much about the Navy...or Air Force.I can easily see why fitness standards are important for a land force like the Army and Marines (yes,I know the Marines aren't entirely "land").OTOH,I wonder if fitness standards are just as important for the typical Sailor or Airman.
And yes,I'm prepared to be slammed by former Sailors,Airmen and others.

Slam.
Yes, fitness standards are critical for Airmen. Especially those with flight duties.

See my post further down. Shipboard evolutions require at least a minimum fitness. Special evolutions, including actually firefighting, dewatering and saving the ship can require Hurculean efforts.
The test is a very minimum test. Anyone who can’t pass it should not be in the Navy.

I met all naval standards. I could drink just as fast with either hand.

On board ship every sailor had multiple duties. You have to be able to count on your fellow sailors to take over in battle should someone get killed or hurt. EVERYONE on board ship should be in shape.

We had to walk up 4 flights of stairs (ladders) to eat breakfast. In the snow, uphill both ways.
