Food Tech Startup Beyond Meat Is Rolling Out a Plant-Based Sausage

Plant-based protein company Beyond Meat is continuing its march down the meat aisle.

The El Segundo, Calif.-based startup is beginning the roll out of its plant-based sausage product—dubbed Beyond Sausage—with its launch today at a restaurant in a Boulder, Colo. Whole Foods. The next stage in its distribution will be announced in January, the company says.

Beyond Meat started working on its sausage product a year ago, but CEO Ethan Brown says the new item actually “captures the work that’s been going on for the previous nine years.”

“We just always want our product to be indistinguishable,” Brown says. “This is one I felt we could get closer to the animal equivalent than other categories.”

Color me skeptical. Whenever I try one of these meat substitutes, it is easily detectable that it is NOT meat.

Has anybody out there actually tried this plant-based "sausage?" If so, what is your opinion of it?

Can't they just genetically produce meat in a lab? Without animals or bones?

There is no amino acid replacement for animal based proteins.

Walburger’s introduced a meat substitute called’ the impossible burger’ and many folks are saying it’s excellent and yes, does taste, smell and look like real meat- look up ‘impossible burger’ and it’ll bring you to the company website-

If there’s soy in it, be careful. Soy can mess with your hormones and can cause other problem. Be careful with soy.

Did some government lab produce a virus that killed all of the pigs on the planet and I missed it in the news?

Why do we need a plant based sausage?

Yeah, but have YOU tried it? I want to hear input from people other than fanatic vegetarians who pretend it is just as good as real meat.

Proving once again that humans like meat. If they didn’t, there wouldn’t be the push to create fake meat.

I’ll admit to having bought vege-dogs over the decades from (rare) time to time. In the early 1990s they were horrid in texture and flavor. You really questioned just what the heck you were eating. Today... they are surprisingly not bad. They’re no old school butcher’s hot dog in a natural casing. But not bad. I don’t doubt in another decade or two they might just be pretty good.

Soy can also mess with your taste buds. When I was a kid, I used to LOVE Slim Jims. Then one day they added in soy and the Slim Jims never tasted the same. Even the texture changed. Gone was the slightly moist/fatty texture from Slim Jims that use to snap when you broke them in half.

The new Slim Jims I can't stand. That just totally lack the flavor and texture of the original Slim Jims. And I blame the soy additive.

It’s still rabbit food, and likely to cause intestinal distress.

Fake meat isn’t for vegans. It’s for the rest of us so our betters in government or MNC board rooms are able to control our nutrition.

I haven't had this brand in particular. But thanks to my vegetarian friends, I've had some vegetable-based sausages that, while clearly not made of meat, were actually pretty good in their own right.

Milk is made for a baby cow
Cows are sacred in India
Now there are about 8 kinds of meat to eat and thousands of vegetables legumes and grains
There is karma involved with what you take into your body
Remember the animal fat that is a liquid in the pan is a solid at body temp
All this being said
You really are what you eat
Most important is to eat. A varied diet. And not too much

Isn’t it likely that this vegetarianism is impairing their ability to procreate? That’s a good thing that should be encouraged, no?

Meanwhile, meat prices are astronomical. I wish President Trump would have somebody do something about that.

They can't be worse than Gwaltney Chicken Hot Dogs. You ever try them? They are like eating chicken flavored cardboard. My sister in law buys them because they are cheap. And I keep telling her that she can get also get Hebrew National or Nathan's quality hot dogs for a low price IF she uses coupons. Yet she somehow has the idea that using coupons is like rocket science. Meanwhile her family is condemned to eating chicken flavored cardboard.
