Man Gives the Shoes Off His Feet to Stranger in Need at Kentucky Chick-fil-A

Hallie Cassady’s family eats at Chick-fil-A in Bowling Green, Kentucky at least once a week. But last week’s visit to their favorite restaurant wasn’t like the others. Chowing down with her loved ones, the 13 year old witnessed a gesture of kindness that will alter her perspective forever.

That day Hallie was one of many customers who noticed an old man in need of some help. "His shoes were being held together with duct tape," the teenager recalled to WBKO. Another diner noticed the man too, and Hallie says she watched as he looked in him the eye, took off his boots and handed them to him. The good samaritan, who was later identified as Mark Townsend of Scottsville, ate the rest of his meal wearing just his socks, then walked barefoot out into the cold.

Inspired by what she was seeing, Hallie snapped a photo of Townsend’s shoeless feet. Her father, Kyle, shared the photo on Twitter. In no time, the post took off, garnering hundreds of shares and a flood of positive responses.

"There really is still good people in this world if we just look for it. It was just so kind of the man to do it," Hallie told WBKO.

"As a parent you always want good examples and role models for your kids," said Kyle. "The irony behind all this is the values and beliefs of the Chick-fil-A corporation, and this act of kindness taking place here in this store in Bowling Green, Kentucky, she got to see something that you don't see everyday.”

"My granddaughter said, 'Pa, why did you do that?' And I said, 'because God spoke to me, and said to give him my shoes,'" Townsend later recalled to WBKO. He continued: "God said, I'll supply your needs, and that's all that matters. I don't worry about nothing. I have a roof over my head, shoes on my feet.”

That’s cool.

My son works at a CFA. As a cashier, he’s empowered to give free food to people who he thinks may need it without question.

So if a mom comes in and looks frazzled cause the kid wants a shake and he sees her saying I can’t afford it, he makes the shake.

The trust level goes to the customers.

I was there once and a couple soldiers were in line behind me. After I paid, I handed my credit card to the cashier and told her to use it for their meals and walked away. I knew she would not take undue advantage of my card.

What a very good man. His family are blessed to have him.

Thank you for posting it. I saw it elsewhere and hoped it would show up here to give the FR family another lift on a great day. Goodness is still recognized. That feels wonderful.

Great gesture on the part of Townsend, thanks for sharing here.

One comment on a quote in the article, though: “The irony behind all this is the values and beliefs of the Chick-fil-A corporation, and this act of kindness...”.

Why is this irony? I think only the best of Chick-fil-a’s values and beliefs.

The “thinker” does not know the meaning of irony.

Irony would be if this happened at McDonald’s.

AS MANY AS 24 VETERANS TAKE THEIR LIVES EVERY DAY. 59 percent of those surveyed knew another vet who’d tried to kill themselves, and 58 percent knew at least one who’d succeeded.

Once upon a time I finished a meal in a chicken place. The box then contained only eaten-off-of chicken bones. Someone came and asked if he could have the box. He took it to another table and proceeded to eat more stuff off of the bones.

I so agree. My sister and I were at a Chick-A this summer and noticed a man with a back pack come in and ask for a cup of water. They gave it to him and he went outside and sat and drank. It wasn't long until my sister went out and asked him if she could buy him lunch. He thanked her and said he was fine. It wasn't long until an employee went out and sat with him for a good half an hour.

Then a woman came over to our table and asked my sister if she too could go in on food for the man. My sister told her what he said. Later the employee came in and both my sister and the other woman went over and talked to the employee. He assured them the man was ok and had what he needed for now. The corporation is really top in hiring Christian people to serve in many ways.
