EPA takes first step toward replacing Obama's climate rules for coal plants

President Trump's Environmental Protection Agency took the first step Monday toward proposing its own version of climate change regulations for coal-fired power plants.

The Trump climate rule would replace the Obama administration's Clean Power Plan with a much more limited version of the greenhouse gas rules for existing power plants. AD Entrepreneur Elevator Pitch Ep12: Glamping, Stress Relievers, Burgers and More! Watch Full Screen

Eliminating the Obama-era climate plan is a key part of President Trump's deregulation agenda. The EPA proposed repealing the plan in October, saying that the plan "exceeds the agency's statutory authority."

Monday's action is the second step in the repeal process by finding a replacement for the climate change rule that satisfies the EPA's legal requirements. The Trump climate rule would be scaled back from former President Barack Obama's regulation.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt emphasized that any replacement for the Clean Power Plan would be confined within the law, whereas Obama's critics say his administration sought to overreach in its interpretation of the Clean Air Act.

Alas, three nearby coal-fired plants are gone in the last three years- two have been demolished and one is being prepped for dismantling. Those jobs? They ain't coming back. The barge terminal where they transloaded the coal from railcars? Those jobs are gone too. The number of coal trains dwindled to nothing for a couple of years and aren't really back. Lots of train service guys were made redundant due to that. The ripple effects are there too... look at the number of new locomotives ordered in the last few years. Cutbacks and closed shops abound.

For a lot of people, it is simply too late.

Now roll back the California emissions standards.

:: a replacement for the climate change rule that satisfies the EPA’s legal requirements ::

The most appropriate change to their “legal” requirement would be to eliminate the EPA’s own decision that CO2 is a priority pollutant. A fine example of the inmates running the asylum.

Yup. I'm one of them. They just shut my plant down this past June. Regulations were so bad that the power company I work for, which isn't small, has been mulling over the possibility of getting out of power generation all together and focusing on other markets. But to be fair, the cheap price of natural gas due to fracking certainly didn't help coal either.

What irks me even more is that liberals seem to think all of us displaced coal workers can just somehow transfer over into the renewable energy sector, but employers in that sector won't even talk to middle-aged, fossil fuel guys like me.

Obama didn't just shut plants down and take jobs away, he also rendered a lot of skills useless and trashed entire careers of some very hard working people, all while the demand for energy continues to increase.

Here’s hoping opportunities are made available to you in your area of expertise in the near future.

Could definitely happen. Deregulation and decreased business taxes seem like the right catalysts.

I was lucky enough to secure another position right after the plant closed, but it's entirely outside of the scope of everything I've worked for over the last 2+ decades (skills, education, licensing...). I also took a $22/hr. pay cut in the process. I'm basically starting from scratch in my mid 40's, working along side 20-something year old kids. Brutal. :)

My family is getting by for now, though, and I have been getting some interest from national recruiters in the power industry. We'll see....

Don’t know how you feel about relocation, but the power companies down here in Florida are hiring.

Trump needs to shut down the entire EPA, IMO.
