It’s just a movie! :)

And that’s incredible what you’ve done.

How can you tell their shape? It must take years of experience.

Actually if my efforts are compared to those of “Snowflake Bentley” or Kenneth Libbrecht, I kind of cheat, but their results are much better. My technique involves using a Panasonic DMC-ZS5, 9 or 10 (kind of fancy point & shoot cameras) on the maximum Macro Zoom setting to photograph flakes that I have captured on a piece of black felt. Once photographed, the felt is shaken to prepare for a new crop of flakes. One can take a lot of pictures quite fast. Down sides include the limit of magnification and no manual focus control. I guess the solution is a more expensive camera and more time out in the cold.

Good snows with flakes that can be captured do not happen real often here in central Illinois and due to global warming we have not had such an event yet this year.

Weather Underground used to let web customers post weather related pictures on their site. There were a number of people doing snowflake photography posting every winter. After the Weather Channel bought them out, they put an end to the peon posting.
