In late October, Chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee Damian Collins called upon Facebook and Twitter to report back with any evidence of Russian meddling in the UK's vote to leave the EU. It's an evolution of the committee's inquiry into the problem of fake news, which Collins considers a pretty serious "threat to democracy." Responses from Facebook and Twitter have landed this week, and if you haven't been following along, it's safe to say Collins isn't particularly impressed with how deep the social networks are digging to identify the true scale of political misinformation and influence exerted by Russia.
Confusion around what's expected of Facebook and Twitter seems to stem from the fact there are two different, ongoing investigations into EU referendum interference happening in the UK right now. Collins' committee is looking at the big picture: How fake news, Twitter bots, promoted posts and everything in between may've swayed public opinion one way or another. The Electoral Commission's independent inquiry is casting a tighter net, primarily concerned with ad spending on social platforms. This is part of a wider initiative by the commission to create greater transparency for online political ads, so voters know what articles, posts or digital campaigns with a political angle are actually funded content, and who's stumping up the cash for them.

Prior to the election of the Donald and Brexit, nobody ‘meddled’ in elections and referendums... Fake news now permeates the entire planet.
Obama meddle with a number of foreign elections. The UK, Italy, Spain, Israel...are the countries I can recall right away. Don’t remember the uniparty in high dudgeon about it.
I’m pretty sure that it is very well documented that all super power countries... The United States, Russia, England, China, etc. have ‘meddled’ in elections since elections began. It has only become important to the socialistic liberal loving press since Trump was elected and thus, the socialist failure of Obama’s presidency was essentially laid bare. The election of Trump was a repudiation of Obama and his policies... And that is what makes the left wing angry.
They could care less about Hillary and her problems. Socialism had it’s 8 year moment in the American sun, thanks to a left-wing press who played the part of propagandist rather than journalist during his tenure, and thanks to two very week kneed Republican candidates.
Obama’s Presidency made the last failed American Socialist Presidency, that of Jimmy Carter’s, look overly tame in comparison. The damage he did was extensive, and most of it was done through the pure power of this Socialist being President rather than through legislative success. Presidential edicts, and that is exactly how most Socialist regimes like to rule, rather than allowing the peoples representatives in the congress and senate have a vote.
