Really? You want to have that discussion?
...eliminates the tax incentive for private employers that subsidize their employees' transit, parking and bicycle commuting expenses.
I believe this is the TransiCheck program. I have been using it in some form since it’s inception. However, even though I knew that an employer could choose to contribute to it, none of the many employers I’ve had have. The vast majority of users of this program contribute their own money pre-tax.
“...corporations are getting a huge tax decrease...”
Corporations do not pay taxes. Taxes are an expense. To price a product you take the cost of the product, which includes all the expenses and you add profit. The consumer of the product pays corporate taxes.
The reason liberals want to tax corporations is that people don’t realize they are paying it and therefore don’t get upset.
This is a big deal in Europe where they have “value added” taxes. A VAT tax is even less visible as it is assessed against every level of production in making the product. Recently, several countries complained that the new GOP tax plan would give American products an unfair advantage in their marketplaces because of their tax system. One outcome of the GOP plan may be to decrease product prices globally. I think that would be a good thing.
Raise the wages and let the employees pay the commuting cost.
well duh! people have to maintain their own cars and drive to work, why should people who take bus or train etc not have to pay their own way?
stupid of people to think govt should some how cover all these things.
People are responsible which which job they choose to take and any costs that go with it.
Hmm, the place I work at has a transit pass that costs$308 month face value, but they pay 60% of the cost, plus it comes out of my paycheck pre-tax.
Not a bad deal, but I’d still pay to not have to drive to work.
maybe the problem is we in USofA keep thinking every adult/couple should have their own home all through their life?
Kids are pushed out asap into expensive apartments or homes, older people stubborn to keep own home. So much waste of money and people barely getting by - relying on govt helps. Plenty of ways to cut costs, share space, learn to relate better to family and relatives, repair broken relationships, become better people , glory to God! - God has a bigger better picture rather than American’s ‘dreams’.
Build it into wage and salary packages...
Still deductible for the company.
If the employee chooses to squander it on Lotto tickets...too bad.
Dumbass notion, anyway.
Another example of why we need to scrap the whole income tax model and move to consumption based taxation, ala the Fair Tax.
“Getting rid of the bicycle benefit, which was adopted in 2009, would save the government a relatively low $5 million a year, McLeod said.”
Oh well, if it keeps the bikes off the road where they impede traffic it’s worth it.
Poor New Yorkers. They are so heavily taxed already and now THEIR EMPLOYERS won’t get FEDERAL business tax deductions for easing the cost of their commuting. /sarc
Oh, can employers provide the “commuting” assistance regardless of income? Yes. How nice for those 1%ers commuting to Wall Street, or Wash.D.C. lobbyists commuting from Maryland or Virginia suburbs.
Where “public transit” is a big deal for a big chunk of the population, they lost the election didn’t they?
You’re making a lot of assumptions about our life and that of our daughter, most of which are wrong. No point is laying out what we’ve done for her and will continue to in the future. Most here seem set on belittling those who will not be seeing a tax cut (or even staying even) with the new tax scheme.
Google is whining because it won’t get the tax break for providing its employees bus service to and from work. Tough. Enough of the social engineering of society around mass transit while if you don’t live along a mass transit rail line, your roads are crowded and crumbling and your taxed heavily for that.

” if you dont live along a mass transit rail line, your roads are crowded and crumbling and your taxed heavily for that.”
Mass transit saves nothing. Even for those along such routes their roads are every bit as congested.
We have light rail in Denver. It carries less than 1% of traffic even when filled to capacity. It costs billions of dollars. The Construction caused more congestion than light can ever save in its lifetime. Light rail will also never be profitable, relying heavily on vehicle taxes to pay for it.
Seriously, how are you losing money?
I’ve posted several times in the past few days how we will be paying more federal taxes in 2018 under the new tax scheme (it’s not tax *reform*). Do a search.
