Americans are getting a little less religious in their Christmas observance, though the vast majority still celebrate the holiday that marks the birth of Jesus Christ, according to the Pew Center on Religion and Public Life.
Pew regularly polls Americans on religious beliefs and observance, asking the same questions over time in order to follow trends in American religion.
Here are some of the results of their poll of 1,503 Americans:
In the 2017 poll, 66 percent believe Jesus was born to a virgin, compared to 73 percent in the 2014 poll.
This year, 51 percent of Americans plan to attend a service on Christmas or Christmas Eve, compared with 54 percent in 2013.
56 percent believe religious parts of Christmas are emphasized less now, but only 18 percent find that bothersome.
Despite ongoing calls from President Donald Trump and conservative commentators, most Americans aren't concerned about the language of Christmas/Holiday greetings in public places. 52 percent of Americans say they don't care how a store clerk acknowledges the holiday, while 32 percent would like to hear "Merry Christmas," and 15 percent would prefer "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greetings."
90 percent of Americans will celebrate Christmas either culturally, religiously, or both.
That “alleged” war on Christmas has yielded great a victory to Satan
In seems to be inversely related to effort people put into decorating their houses with Christmas lights.
They didn’t poll me.
Mass murder, drug addiction, rampant crime, child abuse, sexual deviance, gender confusion...coincidence?
That’s why Islam makes such easy inroads into our society.
I don’t begrudge Obama and his “Happy Holidays” message. It’s pc and maybe Christmas wasn’t his holiday.
Dunno.
But, feels great to have the President say “Merry Christmas”.
Because, it is Merry Christmas....
Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden - no Hobby Lobby - had signs in the gift shop saying, “We say Merry Christmas!”
I’m sure I’ll be flamed for saying this, but I firmly believe that the debacle known as the Second Vatican Council was the catalyst that triggered the increasing exodus of formerly faithful Christians of all persuasions throughout the world.
And I think it’s very unlikely that the pews left unoccupied are going to be filled by the newly converted.
Please. There are so many of you saying that. Nobody can be bothered to “flame” you, sorry for the indifference.
Merry Christmas. Viva Nuestra Senor de Guadalupe. Happy Solstice. Happy Pat’s Birthday!
Can’t really evaluate this poll without seeing the questions.
I also think these are such nebulous questions without definite choices (Clinton or Trump is a defined choice) that the results are questionable.
“Happy holidays” is okay with me:
Strongly agree
Agree
Neutral
Disagree
Strongly disagree
I don’t see that as a concrete choice.
>>There are so many of you saying that.<<
Not sure what you’re referring to here. In any event, you don’t need to apologize for your “indifference,” but when you say “nobody” that’s a tad presumptuous isn’t it?
Oh, I don’t know. Wait a few hours and see if anyone can be bothered to “flame” your banal interpretation of history.
Americans, as in liberals. The real Americans do care. I care.
Don’t dispare folks. I go to church at Ft Lewis weekly and half of the congregation is made up of younger folks. God’s will be done.
‘There are so many of you saying that.’
and that suggests nothing to you...?
‘Wait a few hours and see if anyone can be bothered to flame your banal interpretation of history.’
took me all of five minutes to flame your silly response...
and, just curious, how is this interpretation banal...?
Every point of view has multiple adherents.
And gosh, it’s almost 10:20 and nobody has “flamed” him. Want to take a bet - $20 to Free Republic - that nobody does by sunrise tomorrow, EST?
I want my old time Catholicism back.
