This whole thing blew up in the face of Mitch McConnell and the establishment Republicans. They pushed Roy Moore as a fringe candidate to get Mo Brooks out of the initial primary, fully expecting Luther Strange to win the runoff.

Brooks supporters were so pissed off that they supported Moore -- who was a principled conservative but was probably the only GOP candidate who could have possibly lost the election to a Democrat -- in the runoff against Strange.
