Looking for someone? Yandex People (http://people.yandex.ru/) provides information even on internet users who have restricted access to their social media pages. Produced by Russia’s most popular search engine, Yandex People is powerful and easy to use. It is a great tool for finding Russian users but will provide results for anyone Yandex has indexed. We can see the power of people.yandex.ru by looking for the pages of the web-savvy anti-corruption activist Alexey Navalny.

In the people.yandex.ru page, put your subject’s name into the yellow search box across the top or on the first line of the gray search boxes down the right side—the line that says Ищем.

Some Russian users title their pages with their names in Latin letters and some with Cyrillic letters, so you may want to try both in your searches.

Patronymics — the Russian middle name formed from the father’s name — are generally not used on Russian social media pages.

To find a Russian name in Latin letters: A Russian name can be transliterated in many different ways. Our activist prefers “Alexey Navalny” when writing in English, but his first name could also be transliterated Aleksey, Aleksei, Alexei, or Aleksej, and his last name Navalnyy, Navalnyi, Navalni, or Nawalny.

Prime Minister Medvedev’s first name can be spelled Dmitri, Dmitry, Dmitriy, Dimitry, Dimitri, Dmitrij or Dmitrii.

The Russian version of my friend Eugene’s name is the winner for most possible transliterations: Yevgeniy, Yevgeni , Yevgeny, Yevgeniy, Jewgeniy (in German), Evgueni (in French), Evgeni, and Evgeny.

To search for a name in Cyrillic letters: If you don’t have a Cyrillic keyboard installed on your machine, go to Google Translate (http://translate.google.com) and type the name in English. ...
