MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's military said on Thursday it had accomplished its mission of defeating Islamic State in Syria, and there were no remaining settlements there under the group's control.
Russian bombers had used unprecedented force in the final stages to finish off the militant group, a senior Russian officer said.
"The mission to defeat bandit units of the Islamic State terrorist organization on the territory of Syria, carried out by the armed forces of the Russian Federation, has been accomplished," Colonel-General Sergei Rudskoi, head of the general staff's operations, said on Rossiya 24 TV channel.
Syrian government forces were now combing and de-mining areas where Islamic State had had their strongholds, he said.
"The final stage of the defeat of the terrorists was accompanied by the unprecedented deployment and intense combat use of Russia's air force," he said. The air strikes included 14 sorties of groups of long-range bombers from Russia made in the past month, he said.
Russia's military deployed in Syria would now focus on preserving ceasefires and restoring peaceful life, he said.

I watched Victor Davis Hanson on tv a few nights ago.
The guy is brilliant.
He just finished up a book on WWII.
He talked about how our high altitude bombing campaign probably won the war.
There is a lot of debate on that subject.
He came at it from a completely new angle.
Our high altitude bombers forced the nazis to pull 10,000 88mm cannons off the lines with Russia and use them in Germany for air defense. Those cannons were knocking the stuffing out of the Russian tanks. With them gone, the Russian tanks could attack.
Brilliant.
Brilliant on our side and brilliant of him to notice.
Yeah, but we hate Russia, because Putin is corrupt and he made Hillary lose the election, and stuff.
Hmmm, interesting. I guess I missed this in my morning paper, and any of a number of US media outlets. Guess I missed it at the top of the hour news updates as well. Go figure.

If so it wasn’t intentional.
And they did it by not worrying about ‘civilians’, using un-guided munitions for the most part, using cluster munitions were needed, and thermobaric munitions in quantity - better than napalm, and , using as many extremely lethal weapons as possible short of nukes. They did it the old fashioned way: kill as many of the enemy as quickly as possible, while keeping the press out of the picture - far out of the picture.
Wars are not supposed to end. Those damn Russians will ruin everything.
If they don’t end you can say you didn’t lose because it’s not over!
Just to make sure, I was making a snark at the Mission Accomplished definition.
