I think he’s falling on his sword so others can demand Trump do the same.
I think too much is being made of "now they'll go after Trump for this", as if the left had not already attacked Trump over this already. I think it is more related to elections, such as the one in Alabama this year and the elections in 2018 and 2020. Trump is not going anywhere over "sexual allegations", "p*ssy grabbing", etc. Even the left is smart enough to know they cannot get on their sexual harassment high horse with gropers like Franken around.
