Pope Francis on Wednesday came out against President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
"I make a heartfelt appeal so that all commit themselves to respecting the status quo of the city, in conformity with the pertinent resolutions of the United Nations," the pope said, according to several reports.
The pope said he has "deep concern" about the tensions Trump is creating with his decision. He said he wanted "wisdom and prudence prevail" in order to avoid more division in the region.
"Jerusalem is a unique city, sacred for Jews, Christians, and Muslims," the pope said.

Unless I have this wrong, Muslims took the City by Conquest hundreds of years after Christianity and thousands of years after Judaism, and there is no way that it is as Central to Islam as to the other religions.

In the “status quo”, the Temple on the Rock was Hebrew holy place. After it was razed in 79 AD, an edifice was raised by the Romans, called the Temple of Jupiter Capitoinus, later replaced by the Done on the Rock. It was first the Romans, then the Muslims who are the usurpers.
Jerusalem became what it was under the reign of the ancient Hebrews. The city was conquered again and again during the Crusades, changing hands repeatedly, until the title is now a little muddied, and even lawyers cannot settle the real claims any more. Not that anybody WANTS to have the claim settled, as the city of Jerusalem is still much coveted by some very disparate factions.
