Kenyatta sworn in as Kenya’s president as opposition rally hit by tear gas

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta was sworn in for a second term on Tuesday amid thunderous applause of supporters even as pro-government forces fired on protesters angered by the contentious election process that kept him in power.

The inauguration capped an incredibly fraught few months for Kenya that saw an election canceled, weeks of unrest, an opposition boycott and finally a new election that gave Kenyatta 98 percent of the vote...

...Kenyatta noted that the past few months “have been a trying time” but assured the country that the elections “are now firmly behind us.”

So many people tried to push into the stadium for the event that police had to fire tear gas outside the venue to control the crowd.

The extended election season stretching from August until the inauguration exacerbated the deep divisions in Kenya. Support for Kenyatta and his opponent, Odinga, broke along on ethnic lines. The business community also backed Odinga...

Odinga attempted to stage a parallel prayer rally during the inauguration...

Before his convoy was hit by tear gas, Odinga spoke briefly to supporters, telling them that “Kenyatta is not the president of Kenya” and promising them that he himself would be sworn in as president on Dec. 12.

Odinga withdrew from the Oct. 26 election rerun saying that nothing had been done to address the problems that led to the first set of election results to be annulled.

Article doesn't mention that OBAMA went to Kenya during Odinga's first election and campaigned for him using OUR TAXPAYER MONEY. Isn't that interfering in a foreign election ?

Uhuru is the son of Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya’s founding father and first president (in office 1964–1978), with his fourth wife, Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

I believe Mama Ngina was the third wife of Jomo Kenyatta.

Sort of a Kenyan version of Hillary.

My Kenyan Christian friends are relieved. Many of them are also Trump supporters.
