Winston Churchill was a friend of Prince Edward and personally liked Mrs. Simpson. However, Churchill, PM Baldwin and Archbishop Lang (supported by many others) believed that the King, in his role as head of the Church of England, could not be married to a divorcee. This was the only objection.
Ironically, Churchill wrote Prince Edward’s abdication address which begins...
“At long last I am able to say a few words of my own.”
Acctually, Churchill defended the Weenie King and did not think he should abdicate.
