Japan should be worried about payback, and they better hurry up and develop a deterrence to make the price unacceptable to China.

The headline with that link I posted is silly, but there is a serious threat. China doesn’t care about any nuke treaties and won’t honor any. Those are not “scattergun” nukes. Those MERVs would be quite guided and can go anywhere. It’s been ignored in U.S. discussion for too long.

China also has some major disadvantages: adverse demographics; a constrained geographic position that makes power projection difficult; a large load of bad debt; a bullying attitude toward other countries; a culture that tolerates corruption and cheating; and a looming “middle income trap” in which economic gains become more difficult because they require original scientific research. The US needs to clamp down on Chinese trade abuses and currency manipulation and must bolster its military, and if that is done, China’s rise can be checked and managed.
