Sailing ping. Is there such a thing?

When does sailing not become sailing anymore? And better hope you don’t hit a whale, cable, line or other debris in the water with those canards.

It’s just interesting when you consider they are limited to wind power and a single hull. It’s an extension of sailing that most of us would not aspire to but it is still sailing.

Thanks. I use a photo of the last America’s Cup depicting both boats racing with the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands in the background as my computer monitor home screen image.

My uncle was a ssilmaker in Sarassota through the 60s. I spent a lot of time with him when I was 12 or so. He and another man designed a beach boat made from two sheets of bent together in the shape of an airfoil ovwer a honeycomb inner frame. It had fins on the sides that setended down into the water. The 25 foot mast had two rigid sails that turned on pivoted booms controlled by a single line that led through a block on the mast. There was no rudder, The front large sail was the driving sail and the aft small sail was the steering sail. He put me to sailing it on Boca Ciega Bay until I learned how to control it. Then he timed me at 42 mph. I do not remember how hast the wind was blowing but it was not strong. years later I chanced upon a video of the America’s cup race in San Fran Bay and instantly recognized my uncles’ boats in those catamarans. The sail arrangement was almost identical and they moved by “flying”above the water. Uncle’s boat had the airfoil hull in the air with only the fins extended into the water. The cats had the familiar hydrofoil struts. Uncle Cliff wanted to market the design as a competitor to the Hobie Cats but there was one liability. If the driver let the bow edge dip to the water’s surface the thing would cartwheel. It was impossible to insure.

Looks to be quite a bit faster than the Beneteau 57’ that I’ve been wanting for a number of years now.

And possibly a basis variant for the future of freight.

ice ‘boats’ sail

sail or fly a kite?

wind surfing...

But I sail in part for the serenity, quiet, peacefulness involved. And it taught me patience and acceptance of the weather..
Todays America’s Cup is to adrenaline filled.

Sorry, NOT sailing.

The original terms for AC Challengers was that they had to cross the Atlantic. Real sea boats with practical purposes.

These are now just computerized toys for billionaires.

They need to return to something that relates to real world sailing for real people.

The sailors destroyed the America Cup races when they took the naval architect out of it. Now it is nothing more than a hipped up one design race. Used to be a real world class competition pitting one team of boat designers, sail makers and sailors against one another. I'd get interested again if they brought back the 12 meter concept.

What was mesmerising and fascinating about the last Cup Race was seeing a sailed ship speed along at better than 2 times the speed of wind available.

Frickin amazing...

That whole thing was staged on a sound set in Utah. Or Omaha. One of those more distant places.

And to make some peoples heads explode... Going downwind they are so fast the apparent wind is still on the bow.
