An interesting note.
Charles Ives was one of the founders of Metropolitan Life Insurance. He was the man who invented life insurance as a tool of estate planning.
On weekends he had a secret life. He was an organist at a church in Manhattan, and there he wrote choral music for the church. A year or so ago, I did a series at the Sunday Chapel labeled, "It's meant to be sung," where I took psalms set to music by classical composers and posted them to the thread. Ives was a prolific composer in this area.
He also sat in on weekends at night clubs, such as the Cotton Club, where he played piano.
He spent many weekends composing, and his works are on the cutting edge of music in that era. During the Thirties, at one concert of "modern" classical music, Ives sat in front of a man who complained that the works being presented didn't have melodies that he could hum-m-m-m. Ives turned and said, "You goddamned sissy!"
The Second Symphony was Ives' way of stating that he could composer a classical symphony in the mold of Brahms, Dvorak and Tchaikovsky. He pulled it off. Besides quotes from patriotic tunes, hymns and college songs, Ives quotes Brahms, Dvorak and Wagner. It's a wonderful piece.
