I'm no fan of Joe Biden, and Clarence Thomas had nothing nice to say about Biden in his autobiography My Grandfather's Son ... but Thomas did give Biden credit for one thing:
Anita Hill originally wanted her story to be told in a sworn affidavit that would be submitted anonymously. I assume Biden either has a legal background or ran it past someone who did, because he was adamant that this was unacceptable.
The other women who were supposedly going to testify against Clarence Thomas also faded as soon as Thomas mounted a very aggressive defense and demanded to be heard even if he had no chance of getting confirmed. The story I read years ago about one of them was that she had been fired by Thomas for using slurs against a homosexual co-worker, and there was no way in hell the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee would ever let that get out.
I remember Biden being pretty cool during those hearings. Questioned that Dogged fella about his ego. It was Ted Kennedy whose silence was deafening. Everyone knew why.
Yes, we heard that at the time but could not lock it down. I suspect it's true, but can't confirm it.
