When Kathia Sotelo Calderon found out that the lump on her neck was thyroid cancer, she wondered how shed pay for treatment.
The 19-year-old undocumented immigrant from Mexico, who was brought to the U.S. by her parents when she was 7, had no health insurance. As a noncitizen, she didnt think she was eligible for Medicaid, and she couldnt buy a plan on the state or federal health care exchanges.
While the 2010 Affordable Care Act substantially reduced the number of Americans without health insurance from nearly 50 million in 2010 to 28.8 million in 2017, estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed Friday it specifically excluded undocumented immigrants from participating.
As a result, estimates by the Commonwealth Fund and the Kaiser Family Foundation now suggest that 13.5 to 26 percent of the remaining uninsured, from 3.9 million up to 7 million individuals, are foreign-born and likely undocumented.
While the number of uninsured Latinos has fallen dramatically because of the ACA, (the undocumented) now comprise a greater share of the remaining number of uninsured adults, according to Michelle Doty, vice president of survey research and evaluation at the Commonwealth Fund, who has studied the issue extensively.

Build the wall. Stop chain migration. End birth-right citizenship. Strictly enforce eVerify. Jail time for employers who hire illegals.
Solution: Head to a Mexican hospital in Mexico. You’re welcome.
Send her home to Mexico and let them take care of her healthcare. Send the bill to date as well.
Citizens of other countries who are in our country without permission need to leave or be removed.
US citizens do not have to pay for foreigners.
She should go back to Mexico, or whatever cesspool she came from. Let her figure it out in her actual country of citizenship.
While all extremely sad, the are causing my healthcare costs to rise dramatically. Let them go back to the country they came from. Likelihood is that their country won’t provide them with free healthcare either. So what is the difference in reality, and why should I care?
Las Vegas.
Las Vegas.
Hmmmm.
Didn’t something big happen in Las Vegas a while ago?
Seems like it was something important.
Can’t quite remember what it was, especially since the news has been utterly silent about it ever since...
I really wanted to comment at the source but can’t. I would have said I thought the ten fold increase in premiums, copay, and loss of coverage suffered by middle class Americans seemed to be a hell of a burden.
Bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You mean I can’t illegally enter and settle in the USA and be entitled to free health care? What a rip off!
This is fake news. Hospitals give clinic cards to illegal immigrants faster than US citizens. I can speak for NJ, a sanctuary friendly location like LA is undoubtedly the same.
It’s a bizarre notion that you can gate crash and then get subsidized food, shelter and health care but this is the house the Liberals built.
If she is “undocumented” why can’t she just walk into city hall and get documents?
;-)
Gee fancy illegal aliens being made to wait in line behind American citizens...the very cheek ...
they should run on back to Mexico to see a doctor there...
I guess bank robbers are taking “undocumented withdrawals” according to the MSM.
The solution is SO hard to grasp. I’m not sure I can possibly think of one. The only thing I can POSSIBLY come up with is that we all pay a lot more taxes so every illegal alien turd-worlder here gets free health care for life. Are there other possible solutions?
Shame on this writers for portraying illegals as victims.
....and we're supposed to give a chit about some illegal?
I suspect BS.
She can return to her own country and seek medical attention there.
Firts we had undocumented aliens, now undocumented bears?
