N. Korea conducts rare inspection of key military organ: spy agency

2017/11/20 16:05

SEOUL, Nov. 20 (Yonhap) -- North Korea is conducting a rare inspection of a key military organ due to its "impure behavior" and has punished its top officials, South Korea's spy agency said Monday.

During its briefing to the National Assembly's intelligence committee, the National Intelligence Agency (NIS) said that while the North inspected its military's General Political Bureau for the first time in two decades, Hwang Pyong-so and Kim Won-hong, the bureau's chief and deputy chief, were punished.

The inspection was led by Choe Ryong-hae, the vice chairman of the North's ruling Workers' Party.

"We have been watching the situation as we have gathered such intelligence (on the punishment)," the agency was quoted by Rep. Kim Byung-kee of the ruling Democratic Party as saying.

The bureau is seen as one of the most influential military institutions as it leads the crucial personnel management of other military bodies such as the Ministry of People's Armed Forces. It was once headed by Choe.

The NIS also reported that the North has been focusing on forestalling a possible negative impact of the tightening international sanctions on public sentiment.

"(Pyongyang) has devised a system whereby party organs report people's economic hardships on a daily basis, and it has banned any gatherings related to drinking, singing and other entertainment and is strengthening control of outside information," the NIS said.

Well I don’t know about you guys, but when I tried to read that (several times) I was left at the end, knowing very little more than when I started.

Sounds like sanctions were enacted. Maybe They caused some testing to happen. Some people were disciplined. For what? What did they do? What happened? Did the sanctions prompt them to happen? So many unknowns...

I really don’t know more, than when I started reading that article. At least that is my view.

Ditto.

Perhaps it's the Asian style of communication; speak without actually saying much. You know, they're an inscrutable and mysterious folk. (Oh, what a racist thing to say!)

Banning entertainment is always where communism leads. Everyone is supposed to be happy slaves. The alternative is even less pleasant.

In Korean version of the same article, intel sources indicated they have some further details but won't make it public.

All we can conclude at this point is that there have been some shuffling in top ranks of NK leadership, and maybe some purge.

The reason seems unclear.

Is this a power struggle triggered by sanctions and military pressure leading to some kind of coup? Or is this a preemptive sweep to root out any security threats? We don't know.

Punished someone? Shot ‘em out of an artillery piece?

Don't know. In some cases, they are demoted and sent to a dog house such as a farm where they reflect on their errors while pulling weeds out of ground.

That is the come away when you test your organ.

Nothing more will come out of it until you pull on it or discipline it by making it stand up in the corner

A delicacy it appears is far better for them than the corn the elite troops are eating.

“a rare inspection of a key military organ due to its “impure behavior” and has punished its top officials,”

Sure blame the organ for what the hand does.

Some folks would pay good money to have their organ inspected.

Some folks do. A young man paid me to do just that this morning. In exchange he got a shot of ceftriaxone in the arse.
