The Biggest Disappointment in Trump's Presidency
Townhall.com ^ | Nov 18, 2017 | Jeff Crouere

In this first 300 days, President Trump has faced intense opposition from a variety of enemies. Of course, Democrats and the media have been opposed to everything he has proposed. The “deep state” bureaucrats have proven to be a formidable adversary as well. Unfortunately, “Never Trump” conservatives and establishment Republicans have also been very uncooperative. His legislative agenda has been stalled as Obamacare has not been repealed, despite eight years of GOP promises, and the prospect of the tax reform package passing the U.S. Senate looks very questionable.

Acting on his own, President Trump has been successful in issuing executive orders and slashing regulations. He has brought a new attitude to foreign relations, trade deals and has shown his unflinching support for our military, both active service members and veterans.

Despite an impressive track record of presidential actions, Trump has been needlessly hampered by the ongoing Russian collusion investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. It has been like an ominous cloud hovering over his administration.

This would have never happened had Attorney General Jeff Sessions not removed himself from all investigations into potential Russian interference in the 2016 election. His action led the Assistant Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint Mueller, who has spent months recruiting a partisan team of Democratic attorneys to join this investigation.

The first set of Mueller indictments targeted former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, his aide and a low level national security volunteer. The illegal behavior alleged by the Special Counsel did not involve the President or “Russian collusion.”

Mueller will not be deterred from issuing more indictments in the days ahead. While these proceedings are supposedly secret, the media was given advance notice of the decision to issue criminal charges. A member of the Special Counsel’s office may very well have committed a crime.

It is not a surprise that more leaks are coming out that former Trump National Security Advisor Lt. General Michael Flynn may be the next target for the Special Counsel. At this point, no one knows how long this investigation will last or how much it will cost the American people. In essence, Mueller is operating a shadow Justice Department with Donald Trump in his legal cross-hairs.

It is little wonder why the President was furious with Sessions who created this Mueller monster. In addition, Sessions, in congressional testimony, vowed to remove himself from investigations involving Hillary Clinton, her foundation and the 2016 election. Thus, despite compelling evidence of potential criminal behavior by Hillary Clinton involving the Uranium One deal, the Clinton Foundation fundraising activities, her campaign’s suspicious funding of the Trump dossier and her scandalous treatment of top secret emails, no formal investigation of Clinton has been announced by the Justice Department.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is handicapped by his vows to remove himself from the serious issues that need his attention. While he has been vocal on the issue of combating illegal immigration, he has been unwilling to act on critical matters that impact the survival of the Trump administration.

Due to these significant failings, the President needs to fire Sessions, along with Rosenstein and Andrew McCabe, two Obama administration holdovers in senior positions in the Justice Department. A new Attorney General should fire Special Counsel Mueller, who is hopelessly comprised in his investigation by his close friendship with former FBI Director James Comey. The next move should be the appointment of an independent and reputable Special Counsel to investigate the numerous Hillary Clinton scandals.

This week, Sessions testified before the House Judiciary Committee and had to admit his recall was faulty on a number of issues. Furthermore, he did not project any confidence that he is up to the challenge of reforming the Justice Department and pursuing the real investigations that are desperately needed in our country.

Undoubtedly, Jeff Sessions is a man of character and integrity; however, he lacks the determination, aggressiveness and tenacious attitude that are essential to fight the many forces arrayed against change in the Justice Department.

The sooner the President gives Sessions The Apprentice treatment and says, “You’re Fired,” the better. He has been given 10 months to lead the Justice Department and he has failed miserably. In fact, the lackluster performance of the Attorney General has been the biggest disappointment in the Trump administration. If the President does not act soon, the consequences for his administration could be devastating.

Jeff Sessions has seen what is going on and how this Russia investigation has spiraled out of control yet he hasn't offered to step aside so the DOJ could take a more active role. That, coupled with the Senate's threat to not confirm any more nominees if Sessions is fired leads me to believe Sessions was a plant all along and his mission from the day he endorsed Trump was to spy on him for the GOPe and hinder him if he won.

I do believe : Sessions is also in on the Russia Uranium deal,(among a lot of other scandal coverups) they need to all stick together in order to keep it quiet>

Trump is an outsider and that is terrifying to the deep staters .If Trump could gather a group with power they would be in bug trouble. But I do think they are safe. If my theory is true and if Trump gets too much power they will have to assassinate him. But I think he will be safely lame ducked through the remaining term

I recently read that Sessions was being considered as a replacement for Judge Moore because “he remains popular among Alabama voters”. Whoever came up with that is out to lunch. He was my Senator and I was very proud of him, now I would not vote for them him to be a dog catcher. That feeling is shared by a vast majority of voters in the district. I we from being proud of his to be ashamed to have ever voted for him. He turned out to be another DC swamp creature.

I totally agree with you!!
Sessions is singularly responsible for both allowing his President to suffer through Mueller’s Witch Hunt and for inhibiting the draining of the Beltway sewer!!!
I hate to think we are stuck with this incompetent, inept traitor for the duration!!

Re: “His action [Sessions’ recusal] led the Assistant Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint Mueller...”

Rod Rosenstein was also appointed by Trump.

The fact that Barack Obama allowed “RINO” Rosenstein to keep his previous job as U.S. Attorney for Maryland for EIGHT years should have been an instant tip off to Trump that Rosenstein was not friendly to Conservatives.

Instead, Trump made Rosenstein Number Two at the Department of Justice, and Rosenstein returned the favor by appointing “RINO” Mueller to prosecute Trump.

Trump's appointment of Sessions was a bad decision.

Trump's appointment of Rosenstein was an inexcusable decision.

Other than some true believers, Sessions is a disappointment for most. However, the hits will keep on coming with DJT’s nomination of Kirstjen Nielsen to head DHS - She’s an ardent proponent of open boarders and firmly against the Wall. A former Agent said on a cable show that er confirmation will signal a mass exodus of agents from DHS - the dedicated, good ones.

Even better ICE is headed by an Obama hold-over and most of the staff are also hold-overs. No replacement scheduled yet as far as I know.

Yeah, it’s troubling about these appointees. These are the things that discourage voters.Trump is close to the most ideal person to turn this country around and if certain things don’t get done soon He will have to work with a Demoncratic Congress next year. Who knows? That might have been the plan all along. It’s hard to explain the behavior of these Repubicans. They either have dirt on them or paid off,or both.

There are DOJ guidelines that say Sessions must recuse himself from campaign related issues if he was active in the campaign.

I believe Sessions is an honorable man. Trump relied upon his judgment; I'm sure had Trump known this was necessary Sessions would not have been nominated.

Regardless of how we got here...we're here. Sessions' presence prevents the functioning of not only the DOJ but, because of Obie's carryovers, the entire government.

I'm sure this is his dream job, and all that...but he can't want to be the tool the RATs use to hobble this last, best chance to beat back the swamp.

Sessions has to go. Because of the politics, he has to resign.

The problem I think Trump and Sessions belatedly came to realize was Trump should not have appointed to the post of attorney general anyone who had any connection to his presidential campaign. It’s a personal lawyerly look at possible conflict of interest - could ANYONE with any connection to his campaign be called into and answer questions concerning any “Russian” (or other campaign) connections. Yes. But an AG cannot be on both sides of that.

That to me is why Trump should not have appointed Sessions to AG. If it were not that issue, I think Sessions would have been, and has been generally O.K. (with a few caveats).

Underestimating the deep state and not firing people who were out in the open Obama holdovers...there are hidden ones, but those the trump admin knew, but kept there.

I believe when that deal is finally taken apart we will find that most of congress and the senate were in on the deal. It will be like the check kiting scandal or ABSCAM.

Undoubtedly, Jeff Sessions is a man of character and integrity...

Why do people keep insisting that this is so? First, I don't believe there is a member of Congress in either house that is a person of character and integrity. Not one. Politicians in general are not people of character and integrity, which is why President Trump was elected. He was outside DC, not a career politician; a businessman who shared the public's desire to drain the Swamp.

But the Swamp appears to be winning, thanks in large measure to Jeff Sessions. If he had character and integrity, Sessions would never have saddled the brand new president with a purely Swamp-driven "special" counsel. Sessions alone opened that door and let Mueller and his cabal of Leftist lawyers walk right in.

By doing that, Sessions didn't just sell out the new president. He sold us and the country out too.

A special counsel appointed to investigate the Clintons would go a long way towards minimizing the damage Meuller can do to Trump. While Meuller continues to catch bait fish (Manifort, Gates, ...), a Clinton investigation has a wealth of evidence right now to indict really big fish: the Clintons, Comey, Lynch, & ultimately Obama.

I doubt even politically deaf, dumb, & blind Leftists could ignore such a legal tsunami.

It really isn’t that hard to be a senator. Nothing much is expected of them and they rarely disappoint. The current number of unsavory and/or unqualified senators are too numerous to mention. Taking Sessions from a do-nothing job, appointing him to head an agency that’s got a huge backlog of investigations to conduct and then expecting him to perform seems to have been an unreasonable expectation.

“There are DOJ guidelines that say Sessions must recuse himself from campaign related issues if he was active in the campaign.”

The shits of it is the whole Russian meddling thing was contrived by the democrats out of thin air. Therefore it was bogus from the start and everyone knew it. If Sessions had any hair he would have told them to pound sand. Instead he folded like a spaghetti noodle.
