The world's first human head transplant has been carried out on a corpse in China in an 18-hour operation that showed it was possible to successfully reconnect the spine, nerves and blood vessels.

At a press conference in Vienna on Friday morning, Italian Professor Sergio Canavero, director of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, announced that a team at Harbin Medical University had "realised the first human head transplant" and said an operation on a live human will take place "imminently".

The operation was carried out by a team led by Dr Xiaoping Ren, who last year successfully grafted a head onto the body of a monkey.

Prof Canavero, said: "The first human transplant on human cadavers has been done. A full head swap between brain dead organ donors is the next stage.

"And that is the final step for the formal head transplant for a medical condition which is imminent.

The operation was a success, but the patient is still dead.

...showed it was possible to successfully reconnect the spine, nerves and blood vessels.

If they could really do that they could make the people paralyzed by spinal injuries walk again. But they can't because this is BS.

IT’S A CORPSE!!!!!

They have NO IDEA if it “worked” or not.

They did not, like “Frankenstein”, jump-star it into “life” and see how all the connections actually worked.

That's a great point.

“How do you know the nerves work on a dead corpse”

I’ve worked with frogs before; a poke or an electrode can get things moving with an intact nerve.

Drat, you beat me too this all too obvious movie analog.

IMDb's synopsis of the movie, "The Thing with Two Heads (1972)"; A skillful but racist Dr. Maxwell Kirshner (Ray Milland) has his head attached to an unjustly convicted death-row inmate, Jack Moss (Roosevelt "Rosey" Grier), because of Kirshner's fatal illness. Hilarity ensues but the racist is left behind on an operating table, bodiless!

All lives matter?

Head grafts have been done on dogs in the USSR. Films of it are on youtube.

Also decades old footage of a dog’s severed head that is kept alive.

The subjects with grafted heads lived weeks before infection ultimately set in.

Also a scientist in Cleveland repeated it in the 1990s with a monkey.

Hillary will continue running Nanabot 3000.

It seems like just yesterday that they did the first face transplant, but it was actually in 1976:
