When I was stationed at Fort Benning, GA in 1971, an 18 year old in my Company got a 16 year old pregnant and he suddenly became the groom at a shotgun wedding.

A legal or customary marriageable age for females being more than a year past average puberty is something that is new in civilization. It takes a wealthy society and modern medicine for delayed marriage of girls to be practical and a society that no longer feels it needs many children to maintain population.

You can feel that way only because you were born after 1950. 16 year old girls were pretty close to being “old maids” before, say, WWII. Modern medicine and the concomitant drastic reduction in infant mortality and and deaths in childbirth have made late (after 17 years of age) marriages practical. New husbands were generally several years older than their wives because females needed to be “of childbearing age” and males to be of “family supporting” age.
It was not common but it was normal in much of the South until various times after WWII, indeed in all of the country until the 20th century. You are pampered by the modern medicine and low mortality of the last 80 years. Public school leaves most modern adults quite unaware of what the world was only a century ago.

LOL! Your post was about ‘39 years ago’. Now in another post you admit that it was mostly pre-WWII and now you are backing back to 100 years ago!
