As GOP lawmakers discuss Roy Moore stepping aside, democrats start recruiting volunteers to commit perjury for "the cause" and donors to pay legal bills and settlements.

He should be gone if he did it. Republicans and conservatives should condemn him MORE than a democrat in this situation (he embarrassed US, not just himself and liberals). But the GOP should not be establishing a precedent for Ds to disqualify every future conservative based on accusations. Or to encourage Ds to dig even deeper than candidates usually do to find SOMETHING to "disqualify" the opposition.

This has the stench of Dan Rather and the “Texas Air National Guard Memos” about it. Even if we hadn’t had the fingerprints of Microsoft Word ™ to prove it, you could pretty much tell that an explosive charge like that would’ve turned up years earlier if there had been anything to it. There was plenty of incentive to find it in Bush’s case when he twice ran for governor of Texas, and similarly Judge Moore has been "holier than Democrats” and with a high and even national profile for, it must be 2 decades by now.

I dismiss the charges out of hand on the basis that there is no pattern of abuse that we would have heard about long before this, given the politics. On top of the absence of a history, there is the fact that we know for a fact that the WaPo would not have published this story about a Democrat. There was the Monica Lowenski story, only published because Drudge blew the lid off. And “the Breck Girl” and his side squeeze. Journalism judges the significance of a story according to whose ox is being gored.

This is a pure “he said, she said” case. It’s presumably impossible to prove the negative of the charges against Judge Moore, and that’s one reason we have a statute of limitations. And the other reason is that it can only be so important to punish someone who has been clean for, what? - forty years in this case? Not electing Hillary was too important to swallow the smears of Trump, and not electing a Democrat for one senator out of a hundred, with a narrowly split Senate is too important to be credulous of these charges.
