Is Virginia Now a Blue State?
Real Clear Politics ^ | Caitlin Huey-Burns | November 9, 2017

Nine years ago this month, Democrat Tim Kaine stood in front of the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial at the state capitol in Richmond and declared: "Old Virginny is dead!"

The then-governor was referring to the election of Barack Obama, who carried the commonwealth on his way to becoming the nation’s first black president. Obama also was the first Democrat to win Virginia in over four decades, and his party hasn't lost a presidential election there since. But it was Tuesday night's election in the Old Dominion -- where Democrats won the governor's mansion for a consecutive time and gained a near-record 15 seats in the House of Delegates — that has politicos wondering whether Old Virginny can now officially be considered a blue state.

A GOPer has not won a statewide race since 2009. The state said no to a range of POTUS candidates from McCain, Romney, and Trump. NoVa all the down I-95 to Fredericksburg is an part of the NE Corridor. Yankees, I am one of them, and 3rd worlders have changed the state to a slighter shade of blue from say MD.

Yes, it is a blue state. But is WV now a red state? Are MI, PA and WI now trending red. I suppose what I am saying is that re-alignment is not uncommon. At one point, the South was all blue.

VA is the swamp. With the expansion of the Federal Government to record levels, where else would the swamp reside? VA’s economy is dependent on the swamp.

It is sad that VA is now blue but it is encouraging that other long held blue states are turning red. VA turned blue because it became part and parcel of the urban, coastal elite that stretches from Boston to DC. Meanwhile in Middle America the forgotten masses realized that they were just that, forgotten.

Watching “Remember the Titans” which takes place in Alexandria, Va is a period drama in the sense that world no longer exists. There is nothing resembling a Southern accent in NoVa anymore.

VA is a black & blue state. It’s a bit like two states.

NoVa is Leftist ruled by the D.C. crowd. The less populated SoVa are mostly Christian conservatives. Unfortunately that means VA tends to tilt Left.

I suppose we could waste time and energy trying to turn VA red again but recognizing why it turned blue is the big realization that must take place. Then, ask ourselves, what can we realistically do about it? In this case, given that we have NOBODY willing to shrink the Federal Government, I say that there is jack and poop we can do about it and jack just left town.

Northern Virginia is DC suburbs. Deep Blue...................The farther you get from DC the redder it gets, but not enough to overcome the dense DC population centers.

Like Illinois is Chicago. the rest of the state is irrelevant............

Virginia has been a Democrat state since before the Civil War. The large metro/urban sprawl areas have been carrying most (not all) elections for over a decade.

An electoral college would be a wonderful dream (but implausible) for a large portion of Virginian commonwealth who feel disenfranchised by the political outcomes during state wide and national elections.

Sad really. I hear Cook County, Indiana has the same smothering effect.

Virginia is absolutely a blue state. What’s most stunning is how fast it all went south. There’ll be no shrinkage of the federal government laviathon deep enough to turn it back, either. Looking at Texas for an eventual destination.

The bad news is that Virginia is now a blue state.

The good news is that states like Ohio and Michigan -- and even Pennsylvania to a lesser degree -- are getting much more red as time goes on.

what makes a state RAT or Repub -Governor ? Legislature ? General Election votes ?

VA has only had 9 Repub Govs since 1856. The last 6 since 1970. Seems RAT to me.
In general election, VA goes with the winner, at least back to 1900, with few exceptions: Trump; Gore;

Why is anybody even asking this question ? and
why is the left orgasmic over wins in already RAT states ?
