What slanted crock of crap. She should know full well that every ambassador, or consulate general, always has person appointed in "their" stede whenever one is away from post. This second person gets valuable time and experience filling in for an ambassador when coming up in the professional ranks. The real BS is that foreign service officers who become ambassadors end up in third world shitholes, while the "endless supply" of political appointed ambassadors come from the President's Pen - as does the careerists.

Every ambassador tenders their formal resignation upon change of the presidency; this is a requirement that triggers the president to either grant their continued service, or they are recalled to Washington and Main State.

I served in the foreign service as one of the vaunted/authorized strength of 15,000 foreign service officers and specialists worldwide. If an ambassador quits or is recalled we appoint one of the senior folks at post. The Foreign Service Association is one of those "self important" organizations who co-mingle themselves with the Union and the active members of the State Department; this is neither bad nor good, and keeps the old timers in the loop in their own center of the universe.

There’s some good news. Trump’s purging that nest of communists and Marxists.

“...American Foreign Service Association union.” I never heard of such a union. Are they organized to negotiate for wages, benefits and working conditions as do labor unions?? If so, with whom do they negotiate??

How about another change— make an executive order eliminating from cabinet agencies ANY government employee unions. And cite FDR when he does it. NO fedgov employee should be in a union— period, on the basis that they may not “lobby” to increase funding for their agency (and by so doing, increase their union membership). In NO other employment would this capability exist— private company employees of course should be able to organize into a union. Not fedgov lifetime employees. This is what is bankrupting States and the ever increasing (hint: baseline budgeting increases) for the last 50 years in the federal government. Ask any fedgov management (who uh, isn’t in the same union as their employees).

With the great reception Trump is getting in Asia, bad timing for this article fretting over diminishing relationships with the world.

The empty slots need to be abolished so a successor deep state POTUS can't just waltz in and build out the spider web again. Shrink the entire enterprise until it is a tenth of its current size. Then sell the building and relocate it to
