The two men respect each other...When Xi was here Trump went out of his way to make Xi and his wife comfortable and welcomed.
The Chinese are intelligent and hard working BUT they’re newbies to the ‘ins and outs’ of capitalism. To be a top world power they need that understanding... Trump needs to understand that region of the world. Both men comes to the table with gifts and needs...

I wonder how much of this is also reflective of the recent power consolidation in Beijing.
Not to downplay the honor, but only 2 other China leaders (Mao and Deng) were provided the same level of power the current Xi Jinping.
He is only the 4th (Jiang Zemin being the 3rd) to have their “thoughts” put into the constitution. Jiang was provided the honor - but never really had the same level of consolidated power and still had rivals present in the party.
I can see this as an honor on Trump that is also indicating the power of Xi in his newly elevated status.
