ABERDEEN -- Shortly before 9:40 p.m., Republican Kim Guadagno appeared on stage to concede the New Jersey governor's race to Democrat Phil Murphy, saying she made "the best possible case" to voters in her efforts to succeed Gov. Chris Christie. "We left no stone unturned," Guadagno, Christie's lieutenant governor, said, quickly arresting the lusty boos that sprang up at the mention of Murphy's name.

I remember Diane (1955) which tracked up the Delaware River...A large tree fell in front of our house. Fortunately, it fell parallel to the street.

(At least it's not something that happens as often as in Florida!)

Would you say the same about Sarah Palin or Nikki Haley? or Kelli Ward?

"Jersey doesn’t tax Social Security (yet) - you also get a pension deduction of up to 20k (and rising in years to come) if you meet income restrictions - some relief at least - I did my parents’ income taxes for the feds and Pennsylvania for several years - Penna income taxes were a nightmare to compute as I remember it....."

Both fortunately and unfortunately, I'll exceed $20K in SS payments, plus I'll have mandatory IRA distributions coming up in a few years. I like my work, and I plan to keep working as long as I can. Of course NJ hates me.

Correct me if I'm wrong but PA has a 3.07% flat state income tax plus a municipal income tax capped at 2% except for Philly and Pittsburgh. At least on the face of it, it seems less complicated than NJ.

PA does seem to fall down on its death tax -- but I'm not the one who will do the complaining.

Before he's done with the state I think Murphy will leave no stone unturned. It's practically insolvent right now and he's promising billions in new spending.

Optics in politics... especially when the enemy knows how to use them. And the dems, like it or not, know how to play this game.

Yup. Christie handed them those "optics" (on the beach) on a silver platter.

Seriously comparing bat guano with those ladies? Come on. but in general...YES. We need strong, brash Republican men right now. white males don't want women on the ballot.

You don't have to declare any Social Security income on your tax return in NJ - it is state tax exempt - the up to 20k deduction is for pension payments you might have received from your company - it can be taken as long as your gross income doesn't go over 100k per year, and is due to rise by 20k per year for the next four years - you do have to report your IRA income, but only the net amount after subtracting what you paid for the original investment, which saves a little in taxes....

It was years ago that I did the Penna taxes so I don't remember the details, but it seemed at the time much more convoluted than the Jersey form, which follows the federal return fairly closely....

I think Murphy is going to be a disaster - maybe it's worth moving out of the state after all.....

Expected. Christie had a terrible rating - had no chance. Trump made a mistake in not giving Christie a job. For one, if he was AG, we’d have a special prosecutor on Hillary now. Two, his Lt. Gov would have been in office for months, and people may have liked her. Instead, they associated her with Christie and voted Democrat.

Before Christie was elected our property taxes increased 6-7% per year (for the teachers’ unions, primarily); he capped those increases at 2%. He was the best we could hope for; it was no accident he was re-elected easily. The media has spent the last 4 years “trumping” him (24/7 BS media attacks); I expect this will happen more widely before the mid-terms next year.

You watch what happens in NJ now, and you’ll understand why Christie was a two-term governor in one of the most heavily taxed state in the country. We are losing American taxpayers at a terrifying rate, and they are being replaced with imported braceros just to keep the public school systems from folding. Christie slowed but couldn’t stop the inevitable, and having a candidate who pledged to raise taxes replace him is horrible. Nobody wants to buy homes here anymore because we all can clearly see we’re just tenants of the teachers’ unions; Christie was the only one to stand up to them.

While the Dem successfully portrayed Kim as a clone of Christie, I see no evidence she was anything like him. He was adamantly pro-life, and seeing a pro-abortion woman lose doesn’t bother me a bit. I may have been better off financially with her in office, but these are evil people.

Putting Jared Kushner's dad in jail may have had more than a little to do with Christie's fortunes with the Trump administration.

Bridgegate probably influenced Christie's fortunes here, too. I don't think that Christie ordered it, but he still hired the idiots who thought that it was a good idea.

The state is teetering on the fiscal brink and this should be enough to push it over the edge.

The pizza, beaches and tomatoes will always be good, though!

Yes; from Wikipedia: “Guadagno supports a pro-choice position on abortion, but would like to see fewer women choose the option. Christie expressed a pro-life stance on abortion during the primary campaign.[6]”

No loss here for social conservatives.

When you shut the beach down, and you are pictured with your family on a beach that no one can be on, you know your party will lose. It is time for the NJ GOP to be torn down and rebuild.

I've lived in NJ since 2002. I love this state. I had hope for Christie, and even voted for him AFTER he did this (and speaking of bad optics - this was his all time worst):

So.. thanks for nuthin Christie ! Maybe someday NJ will rebound....

It’s beyond stupid to run anyone whose name sounds like bird droppings. It’s also beyond stupid to expect that anyone, man or woman, running as a Republican was going to win in this environment in NJ.
