President Trump blasted GOP gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie in a tweet Tuesday evening in an effort to distance himself from the Republican's losing effort in Virginia.

Trump's tweet knocking Gillespie came shortly after news outlets called the race for Democratic Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, who looks to be on track for a comfortable victory.

Trump endorsed him but the candidate ran from him.

He would rather lose than support or be supported by Trump

This seems to be the position of the Republican controlled congress as they simultaneously take a knee and play prevent defense against the MAGA agenda. I think they are trying to deliberately cause an economic meltdown before the mid terms. Disgusting!

“...Never Trumper Gillespie lost...”

Actually, the good citizens of Virginia lost. Another stupid democrat POS is now in office, and ready to f*** the Citizens over for the next 6 years in that beautiful state.

It’s not good at all.

Gillespie didn’t just f*** himself, he f***ed the whole state.

Dream on. VA went for Clinton. Now we have a big liberal victory.

You can see it as a victory, because the RINOs lost. But there is no way a liberal victory is a victory for us.

It’s a loss - pure and simple.

Trump needs to get on board.

Exactly. This is a loss for George W Bush and Karl Rove, two men of the swamp. Gillespie is their man, not Trump’s

Better an enemy than a turncoat. Gen. Patton said it best, I’d rather have a German division in front of me than a French division behind me.

I like the idea of sending certain portions of the Federal workforce to Illinois, California - places where their votes would not matter.

RINO went down. What did Mitch McConnell say about nominating candidates who can win the general election?

Sometimes getting rid of dead wood is a win in the long run.

Here's Trump's Tweet:

Ed Gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what I stand for. Don’t forget, Republicans won 4 out of 4 House seats, and with the economy doing record numbers, we will continue to win, even bigger than before!

Contains praise for Gillespie's hard work which The Hill's headline of course omits.

I’ve never had anything against Ed Gillespie and I hope most of these posters are wrong about him. At the end of the day, I imagine, it was a case of money talks and he couldn’t say the things necessary to whip up the Trump voters.

The uniparty doesnt care.

If the rino uniparty guy wins they are happy.

If the democrat uniparty guy wins they are happy.

They can play it either way.

Trump needs to get on board.

Trump needs to get on board what? Trump did pragmatically support Gillespie.

Back stabbing losers like Bush, Rove and McCain would rather support Democrats. They need to get on board or STFU.
