A U.S. service member was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday afternoon as a result of wounds sustained during operations in the country's eastern Logar Province, according to the U.S. military.
On behalf of U.S. Forces Afghanistan, we offer our deepest condolences to the family of our fallen brother, said General John Nicholson, the commander of U.S. Forces Afghanistan, in a press release. Despite this tragic event, we remain steadfast in our commitment to the Afghan people and to support them in our mutual fight against terrorism.
The identity of the service member has not yet been released, and the military said it would release more details when appropriate.
Separately, local officials reported civilian fatalities as a result of U.S. airstrikes in northern Afghan province of Kunduz on Saturday as U.S.-backed Afghan forces fought against the Taliban, the New York Times reported. Capt. Tom Gresback, a U.S. military spokesman, said U.S. forces were investigating the allegations.
This death of a U.S. service member Saturday is the second one in Logar Province in recent weeks.
Last weekend the Pentagon identified a Chief Warrant Officer Jacob M. Sims as the U.S. service member who was killed in a helicopter crash on Oct. 27. Six crew members were also injured in the incident.
The deaths follow President Trump announcing his commitment to a new strategy for the 16-year conflict in Afghanistan during a speech in August, which includes ending artificial timelines in favor of making judgments based on conditions on the ground. The administration also signaled the U.S. could sent thousands more troops to the region.
That sand flea infested sand pile isn’t worth the death of an Australian spike nosed fa*t beetle.
Why can’t we just blow the place up once in a while...just for practice.
It would make a great gunnery/bombing range.
Why the hell are we still there?
We could see what happens to an area that’s been hit by a dozen MOABs.
Somehow create a beach and water came up from below and turned it into a resort. Somehow the MOAB’s would target any muzzie and do away with them.
Prayers for our fallen.
Somehow I suspect Trump is going to take a very different tack than Bush or Bammy. He hopefully will end this.
Prayers for the family. May they have peace.
My proposed ROEs on the GWOT....every time we have a terrorist attack in the US, or on US interests....we vaporize the terrorists’ home town(s).
So you think we just need to shoot our way onto the tarmac just to have a chance of not being blown out of the sky while leaving?
RIP
We should have leveled Tora Bora and said we’ll be back if we need to.
I’ve been saying this for decades. look at a map of the scuzzbucket Middle East—you bomb Iraq with a nuke and make the entire Muzzy land a glass parking lot. Take any oil that’s left and erect a few capitalist based strip malls.
The crying libs won’t go for it. Imagine what they’d be saying during WW2 when we were firebombing Japan and reducing German cities to rubble?
From the men I know who have been there, blowing it up would be an upgrade.
They're on a "need to know" basis, and they don't need to know. For all I know, they could be doing some of that now.
