MOVING BEYOND CAPE BOJADOR
The early Portuguese explorers believed that the oceans were impassable below Cape Bojador, a point on the West African coast. When sailors set aside their fears and moved past Cape Bojador, they found that their fears were groundless, that their limitations were imaginary. We all have our own Cape Bojador. We fear things that we need not fear. We draw boundaries around areas of our lives and decide that we can't go past them. Since we believe these false paradigms, we will stay within their artificial boundaries and lose whatever experiences we might have found outside them. What limits do we set upon ourselves? Have you thought about working on your college degree, but fear getting started? Does a certain rating appeal to you, but others have told you it was unattainable, so you have remained where you are? Advancement or promotion seems so far away that we resign ourselves to our present position and fail to expand our skills and knowledge. More than 300 years before the time of Christ, Alexander the Great was marching across Asia Minor. He led the greatest army ever put together up to that time. They had conquered every foe. No one could stand up against them. They reached the Himalaya Mountains, and the advance leaders came back to Alexander full of concern and dismay. "We have marched off the map," they said. "We should go back to where we know." And they had literally marched off the known map of that time. Alexander listened to them and then said this: "Mediocre armies always stay within the known areas. The great armies always march off the map." Making decisions, initiating new relationships, starting projects, taking a leap of faith, all require that we go beyond our Cape Bojador. Are we willing to press on and take the chance of "marching off the map?" Let's go for it! Full speed ahead!

Joy and Justice
November 5, 2017
You rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth.
Psalm 67:4
At a conference in Asia, I had two eye-opening conversations in the span of a few hours. First, a pastor told of spending eleven years in prison for a wrongful murder conviction before he was cleared. Then, a group of families shared how they had spent a fortune to escape religious persecution in their homeland, only to be betrayed by the very people they had paid to bring about their rescue. Now, after years in a refugee camp, they wonder if they will ever find a home.
In both cases, victimization was compounded by an absence of justicejust one evidence of our worlds brokenness. But this vacuum of justice is not a permanent condition.
Psalm 67 calls on Gods people to make Him known to our hurting world. The result will be joy, not only as a response to Gods love but also because of His justice. May the nations be glad and sing for joy, says the psalmist, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth (v. 4).
Although the Bible writers understood that equity (fairness and justice) is a key component of Gods love, they also knew that it will only be fully realized in the future. Until then, in our world of injustice, we can serve to point others to our Gods divine justice. His coming will see justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! (Amos 5:24).
Father, help us to work for Your justice now where we live, even as we await the day when You will make everything right. We long for that day.
Do you have a special place in your heart for those who are being ignored, misrepresented, or taken advantage of? Psalm 67 expresses such a heart for the whole world. Yet notice where the songwriter begins and ends. He starts by adapting the well-known Aaronic blessing of Israel (Num. 6:2426). He rightly interprets Gods desire for his own nation when he says, May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us (Ps. 67:1).
Gods heart for Israel, however, isnt where the song stops. Its just the beginning. The author of this psalm recognizes Gods purpose in choosing some for the blessing of all (vv. 27). From the beginning, Gods promise to bless the descendants of Abraham was not just for the benefit of an undeserving few. Gods plan and vision was far wider. His purpose was that, in a descendant of Abraham, all of the families of the earth would be blessed.
That intent was fulfilled in Jesus. Living and dying to show the love of God for the world (John 3:16), He began by naming twelve disciples to be His personal and chosen witnesses to proclaim the gospelfor the good and blessing of all.

"I VOW TO THEE, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace."

This morning, the Mouse on my computer froze up, and I could not post to FR! YIKES! Of course, the thing was over 10 years old, the finish was totally worn off, it had a patina of scum, sweat, and tears, and I was surprised it lasted that long. So, after a very challenging coastal hike with Penny on the longest esker in New England (a high ridge left by the glaciers in the Ice Age), I hopped on Blue to go to the Apple Store to get a USB Optical mouse for my Vintage MacMini desktop.
After a very chilly ride, I got to the Apple store and parked my bike, and suddenly realized that the store was in the middle of the launch of a new $1000 cell phone, and the lines went out to the street. I managed to snag an employee, and told him of my needs, and he said that they don’t have anything like that anymore. Apple does not support their “Legacy” Equipment, even though mine still works fine. They had bluetooth mouses, but they only work with OS10.11 or higher (I have OS10.6 LOL).
OK...so I saddled up and rode to Braintree (another chilly ride!) and I noticed I was up to 140 miles on my tripmeter, so I was going to need gas soon. I went to Best Buy, got a cheap Optical Mouse, stuffed it in my backpack and headed for the gas station. After filling up Blue, I was chilled to the bone and REALLY needed something to eat. So another chilly ride took me to a local eatery for some Clam Chowdah (mmm mmm mmm) and then I headed home.
Penny was still blissfully sleeping off her strenuous hike (on the couch) and didn’t even twitch an ear at my arrival.
I installed the new mouse and am absolutely ASTOUNDED at its responsiveness and ease of use. Evidently the old mouse had been making my life miserable for a LONG time, and I hadn’t even realized it!
Today’s chilly ride brought home the notion that maybe it’s time to put Blue away for her Winter Hibernation. (sigh...another summer gone)

Dear God: I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman, Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine feel alone or forgotten.
O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is loving kindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.

Howdy there, PRO!
It’s been a busy week and today was a butt-buster but IT’S OVER! No more early wake-ups for a while. WHEW! I’m not setting the alarm for tomorrow.
One good thing about being away from the house so much this week was not having to deal with these “heatherns”! The full moon has had them wound up most of the week. I guess they wore themselves out at last because the house is nice and quiet ..... for the moment at least.
Sounds like your day was a good one. Well, except for the swearing landlord. LOL!
