A diplomatic spat has erupted between France and Poland over a top court order to remove a cross from a statue of the late Pope Jean Paul II in a Brittany town because it breached rules on secularism.
Poland has pledged to save the work from the "dictates of political correctness" by having it shipped to the late pontiff's native country.
Gifted in 2006 to the mayor of Ploërmel, western France, the 7.5 metre-high statue depicts Jean Paul II in prayer, standing beneath an arch adorned with a large cross.
after a decade-long battle, the Conseil dEtat, Frances top administrative court, has ruled that the cross must be removed from the public space as it violates a 1905 law imposing the strict separation of Church and State.
The Council of State concluded that while the Pope and the arch can remain, the cross must be removed and it has given the town six months to do so.
Upon learning of its fate, Beata Szydło, prime minister of Poland where Jean Paul II is revered, offered to give the statue a new home to "save it from censorship".
Our great Pole, a great European, is a symbol of a Christian, united Europe," she said.
...Conservative and far-Right officials in France expressed outrage, with Valérie Boyer, MP for the Right-wing Republicans party exclaiming: "When will this madness consisting of trying to erase our roots end?"
Louis Aliot, vice president of the Front National, claimed the "iniquitous" decision could precipitate "the destruction of our Judeo-Christian society".

God blessed France in a way that these people understood. Its beautiful there, its fertile. The food is great the cows are happy. The flowers are all over the place
They shove God out in favor of secularism and that cult, Islam. Gonna be very sorry
Western Europe is getting crazier and crazier.
1984 at work.
Pope Jean Paul IIWould have expected the Telegraph to use the late Popes name in English, especially since Jean is a womans name in English.
So, the pope is okay but the cross has to go? Do they not see the insanity? I guess not.
Well, the DemocRAT Party rejected God three times at their convention.
They haven’t been doing too well lately.
The democrat party is out. They have self-destructed. The American voters have rejected them and their insanity
Their demise is being overseen by a leader who will continue to show no mercy.
Hard hit are the RINOs who, while grasping at coattails their sponsors turn into rats while jumping ship like a scene out of an old Disney fairy tale
Importing terrorrists, sponsoring a southern invasion of America haters, charging our kids with trillions in debt. Its over.
Enclaves of liberalism will continue to spin out of control. Theyll get crazy.
It is over. They cannot call on God, even if they wanted to. Their position is anti God in favor of the false god, hillary. She has no power.
Shes melting
By the way, sponsoring a southern invasion of America haters..., did anyone catch that Jose Altuve anthem game 6 mumbling rolling his eyes, hands at his sides? No camera on him game 7 Anthem. Did I see that right? He does not speak English.
Europe is creating quite a spiritual vacuum by walking away from its Christian heritage.
Something (and we know what that “something” is) will readily fill that vacuum, and is already in the process of doing so.
Don’t say “Europe” — I live in Poland we are not walking away from our Christian heritage. Neither is Slovakia or Hungary or Greece etc.
Silliness
But then France has never recovered from their revolution.
You’re right. Ditto for Romania. I should’ve specified “Western Europe.”
There is hope even there — there are small, tight communities of Christians, strong believers even in France and the UK. It is now like the early Christians — small Christian communities in the middle of pagans
