I've heard this theory and find it plausible that Morsi did orchestrate an attempt to kidnap Amb. Stevens. The thing I can't explain, though, is that when it failed due to Stevens' death, why didn't the U.S. drop Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Egypt in the grease? Why participate in covering it up?

Did you forget that we had a Muslim president at that time, and also that Hillary and Morsi are good friends? Hillary might have had advanced knowledge of the Benghazi attack or even helped ENGINEER IT BY STRIPPING STEVENS OF HIS NORMAL SECURITY DETAIL JUST PRIOR TO THE ATTACK in order to ensure he be taken hostage for Morsi. Stevens asked Hillary for more security just prior to the fateful date (9/11/12) and HILLARY DENIED HIS REQUEST.. WHY?
Morsi's #1 campaign pledge to Egypt was getting the Blind Sheik out of U.S. custody. THIS WAS HIS #1 PROMISE TO THE PEOPLE OF EGYPT!!! Benghazi was a way to capture a high profile hostage (Stevens) and use him to gain release of the Blind Sheik. Some believe Obama himself was involved as he would need a really good excuse to release the Blind Sheik.
Allegedly against orders, 2 Navy SEALs showed up and spoiled the plot.
FWIW, the Muslim Brotherhood was deeply embedded in the Obama administration so how could Obama possibly throw them under the bus after the Benghazi attack?
Some also believe Stevens was involved in weapons transfers in the formation and creation of ISIS and Hillary needed him dead because he knew too much. Think 'Seth Rich treatment'. The Clintons have a way of making people disappear after they are done with them, but I believe Benghazi was a hostage-taking of Stevens gone bad.

In 2012 I followed the Libyan situation and overthrow of Ghadaffi on a daily basis, including a number of comments at FR. Below are several links which have been written after the period when I was observing daily. The Wiki article is very detailed, and the Responsibility section covers a lot of territory. For one, bin Laden’s deputy, Zwahiri scheduled this attack to avenge our killing al Libi and to occur on the 9/11 anniversary. He was also involved in releasing the tape which was originally blamed for the attack. On 9/11 Clinton was busy with about 20 embassy demonstrations worldwide, some definitely sparked by the tape. It appears that the Benghazi compound was secretly part of a CIA operation, not the State Department. Amb, Stevens was there for a number of months before the fighting started, was he CIA or just an adventurous and capable young man who made a bad calculation. We may never know the details on that.

I did not find the best photos of the surrounding walls which seemed inadequate to me at the time and were NOT covered with concertina wire. The fourth link contains information about the recent capture of one of the attack leaders, but also points out that THE leader was captured in 2014 and is/was currently on trial in the US when this article was written. Perhaps you will find the real answer to your question here.
