U.S. has no plans to seek Carter's help on N. Korea: White House

2017/10/28

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (Yonhap) -- The United States does not plan to seek former president Jimmy Carter's help in resolving the nuclear standoff with North Korea, the White House said Friday.

Carter made public his willingness to visit North Korea in an interview with the New York Times published earlier this week. He said he had told President Donald Trump's national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, he was available if needed, but has so far received a negative response.

"I don't think that's part of our process at this time," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters when asked if the administration plans to take up the offer. "If that changes, I'll certainly let you know. But that's not part of our current plan or thinking for how to deal with North Korea."

Tensions have run high as North Korea has conducted multiple missile and nuclear tests in pursuit of a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the mainland U.S.

Trump has threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea should the U.S. be forced to defend itself or its allies.

Still, Pyongyang renewed its threat this week to detonate a powerful hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean.

Trump is headed to Asia next week on his first official visit to the region. He is expected to address the growing threat posed by the North, especially during his stops in South Korea, Japan and China.

Carter has a history of working with the North. In 1994, he flew to Pyongyang to resolve an escalating nuclear crisis, and again in 2010 to win the release of a detained American citizen.

Alternate headline in the real world;

America has no plans on compounding it's mistake by having anything else to do with failed ex-President, James Carter.

Why should they?

Jimmy made a hash of EVERYTHING, when he was president, so why should anyone imagine that he could be of ANY "help", with ANYTHING AT ALL now?

Perhaps not Carter, but, perhaps Hillary of Obama or Nancy Pelosi? And then let little Kim suspect that he or she is there to spy. Wonder what will happen to him or her....

Send him to the DMZ before the bombing starts.

Imagine the response: Thanks Mr. President but we have plenty of incompetent people in our party we can use.

We may never know, but I’ll bet the president had to be talked out of offering a job to Carter. He may have come to like Jimmy more after all those nice supportive remarks Carter recently made about Trump.
Expect Jimmy to return to form soon, with acrid, withering insults, put downs and blaming. Something like John McCain.

He is an arrogant sanctimonious man with dangerous conviction, presenting himself as a latter-day Gandhi. If he were to go to N. Korea, he would have brazenly ignore WH and agree to a deal pushed by N. Korea. While he has no power, he would attempt to rally international opinion to his side, positioning himself as a spiritual leader of the world. That would greatly hamper WH efforts to finally resolve N. Korean crisis.

Carter’s negotiating strategy -—

“You can have anything you want, but that’s my final offer.”

Indeed. Carter is an excellent negotiator.

He wrote, "The Art of the Schlemiel."
