By a narrow margin, more voters think Puerto Rico should become a state than think it should stay a territory.
According to the latest Fox News Poll, 41 percent say Puerto Rico should become the 51st star on the flag. Thats an 11-point increase since the last time the question was asked in June 2007, when 30 percent opted for statehood.

Yet another goofyass FOX “poll”.
Puerto Rico is fully corrupt. They would fit right in.
Speaking of that what became of Frank Lutz after Trump called him out?
I heard Puerto Rico is facing a perfect storm. Pardon the pun, not wanting to trivialize the death and destruction.
But it’s a perfect storm because at this time when they are facing recovery from a natural disaster, tens of billions of Puerto Rico bonds are becoming due and payable. They have no way to pay or refinance those bonds. This storm may be what pushes Puerto Rico into full bankruptcy and financial meltdown.
It’s against that backdrop that people are talking up statehood.
Other than another democrat voting state with 2 new dem senators and at least a handful of new dem reps, I guess I don’t know the pro’s and con’s of this debate.
They need the dignity, power and self-determination that can ONLY be found through full independence as a Country.
(everyone, repeat this as often as possible!)
Give Puerto Rico its independence. It would be racist and an example of White Privilege to bail them out.
No to PR statehood. We dont need another deep blue state.
huge chunk of their people headed to the states during and after the storm. we need to get them back to their land. they need to rebuild and run their finances properly. we can’t keep bailing them outa debt as well as help them in natural crisis.
if we cut them loose, that could be bad down the road if another country sets up military there.
PR did not want statehood when flush with cash.
Actually, I’m all for dumping PR and giving them independence & sovereign nation status.
They and their people have been welfare leeches for far too long.
Independence would make them proud of themselves. I’m sure their attitude is: ‘Get out but keep the money comin’ in.”
Cut PR lose and give it independence. They can fend for themselves.
Half the time Fox News is as bad as CNN
Of course!
Which is why they’d prefer statehood.
“tens of billions of Puerto Rico bonds are becoming due and payable. They have no way to pay or refinance those bonds. This storm may be what pushes Puerto Rico into full bankruptcy and financial meltdown.
Its against that backdrop that people are talking up statehood.”
And herein lies my question and I hope that somebody can answer it. If, say for instance, a state such as California went belly up, wouldn’t the other 49 states under the auspices of the feds, be required to bail them out?
Even though PR is a possession and not a state, aren’t we under the same obligation? My point being that it wouldn’t require statehood to be the beneficiary of such protection.
I’m throwing this out there because I don’t know the answer.
It’s like only 2% speak English. That is not people wanting statehood...that is people wanting MONEY.
No
‘huge chunk of their people headed to the states during and after the storm. we need to get them back to their land.’
As U.S. citizens, this is their land and as long as P.R. continues to collapse, more people will be moving from Puerto Rico to the mainland United States.
If Puerto Rican economy is stabilized and somehow becomes prosperous, we will see less migration of U.S. citizens from Puerto Rico to the mainland.
